Suggest you start at the fuel tank. I had the same problem with a 2000/2001 TD4 which suddenly failed without warning and just would not start. When I checked there was no fuel coming from the in-tank fuel pump and I had to replace it. I live in South Africa, and parts get quite expensive...

The photo from Famous Four a few posts previously is for the combined in-tank pump and sender unit. You can see the fuel line connectors on top of the unit. I have just replaced mine in a TD4 built Dec 2000, and registered in South Africa Mar 2001, and it is the same unit.
