They did say it was always there and had not been noticeable due to the diff, however the diff made no noise at low speed and i did not notice it then, he also had said its a common noise and most people just ignore it, but i can not see it getting through its mot in a few months time like it.

Thanks for the advice, got them sorted in the end, was a dodgy earth! Ended up selling the defender as the wife hated driving it and its value went through the roof, ended up with a 3 year newer half the mileage RR sport, which she loves, i have to be impressed with its ability off road and on...
