    iirc it's approx £20-25 a pop and yes it charges on the socket permanent on VW and seamingly switched on LRs so will only charge whilst key switched to at least pos 1

    Here's an idea: Why not remove the cigar lighter from the car (useless item for those that don't smoke) and replace with a small torch such as those fitted to the VW Touareg. I have, it's a very useful addon :)

    I called the RAC to my non-cranking/non starting freelander about a fortnight ago. He found the starter solenoid gummed up. Don't know if that's next to the starter motor anyway but worth a look. (RAC man fiddling under bonnet at nearside front wheel) HTH
