engine intermittent cuts out when stopping

Have a look at the speed transducer, in should be about 12 inches from the end of the speedo cable, at the gearbox end. It gives the ecu an idea of how quickly the vehicle is moving, and more importantly, when your about to stop, so that the idle is controlled effectively. If its bust, or full...

    Laning - South Lake District

I'm only a stone's throw from Cartmel too. Let me know when your planning to have a drive out and i'll do my best to come along. I'm quite familiar with the local area too, if that helps. Mummy told me not to talk to strangers but I'll make an exception. PS. the best mod you can make to your...

Replacing Serpentine engine 3.9 with NON serp

The Keyway in the end of the crank is longer on a serp crank, so if you use a non serp crank the keyway isn't long enough to engage in the crank pulley properly. However, if you make sure the pulley bolt is good and tight you shouldn't have any problems, Dave.

    4.6 into 3.9

The cam from your 3.9 can be used if your on a tight budget. But why not take the opportunity to replace it with something a bit more fruity? seen as its out already?

two round circles when I park my 1986 v8 90

As above, but also check that the floats aren't punctured. A little shake will reveal whether or not any fuel has found its way inside them. (causing the height to be lower).

    Top hat liner block

If you read the spec sheet for the 285, it can cause a little concern, regards clearance between the valve spring keeper and the valve stem oil seal (at full lift), and also compressing the valve spring too much and the coils 'binding' (also at full lift). Neither of which are particularly...

    Top hat liner block

The long duration of the 285 is dampened down quite a bit in a big capacity motor, mines a 4.6, and running an auto box too. Its nice and torquey from low revs, but also picks its feet up when I ask it too. Its not something I would consider for a 3.5, you would have to kick its head in all...

    Top hat liner block

I bought a top hat block from ACR, with new core plugs and cam bearings, and its Peachy. Roland is a top chap and knows his onions. Would highly recommend. I used a piper 285 cam, thats peachy too! Hope that helps, Dave.

    Advanced timing at altitude

How old is the timing light? What condition is it in? I've had the misfortune to use more than one that were so inaccurate that the engine would hardly run! Is it possible to compare it to one of known quality?

Brain Teaser - EFI wiring issue

The big fat orange/brown is your permanent live from battery, purple/white is positive feed to fool pump, white/grey is ign live. I cant remember off the top of my head what the others are but only these 3 are needed to get you up and running. The others are stuff like road speed...

Brain Teaser - EFI wiring issue

James, Where have you taken your ign live from to feed the ecu? Some go dead when the engine is cranking over, for example, the radio feed. If this happens to be what you've tapped into, the ecu will think the ign has been turned off. Dave

    Another Vacuum Advance question

You're also absolutely correct. This is taken care of by the mechanical advance (bobweights) further down inside the dizzy. These rotate the triggerwheel a few degrees around the main shaft that its mounted on, as rpm increases, so as to pass the pick-up sooner. The vacuum capsule moves the...

    Another Vacuum Advance question

RobCavendish has hit the nail right on the head. Its only purpose is to advance the ignition when cruising at part throttle, for economy. The difference it makes is noticable in a road car, but will cause more problems than it solves in a motor that is used mostly off-road, in which case the...

    Serpentine vs v-belt

No, thats the 4.0/4.6, but your not completely wrong. The serp crank has a longer keyway machined in it, so using the serp front end on an older crank just means that the keyway isn't quite long enough to engage in the front pulley properly, which may at first cause a little concern, however...
