Was reading back over this thread and noticed the debate was between 19j and 200tdi - does the 300tdi not measure up or it just didn't come up in the conversation?

£300 a trip out of NI flying and £400 a trip using the ferry so multiple viewings unless all on the one trip would soon break the bank

The best price I can get locally is £5.5k including a new galvanised bulkhead and it is not something I could do myself so thought about buying another donor vehicle then selling off the good parts that remain from the current one.

That sounds good but where would I find one at 5k? everything I see across all search options are around the 8 to 10k mark and I am not best placed for multiple viewing trips.

Thanks for the info everyone. If you were not buying as a purist (or buying as a purist with limited finances) which of the following would you be more interested in, a 1987 CSW with a 19j at 140k miles for £10k or a 1987 CSW with an isuzu engine with a reported 77k miles for £8k?

What miles were on it when it gave up?

Are 19j engines more susceptible to giving up? or do they have mileage limit generally?

So swaps were more likely made where the original engine was a 19j?

Thanks for the link 300bhp/ton a lot of information there to explain the differences. I also see defenders with other engines fitted like transit and isuzu engines - are these better versions than the land rover engines or just a personal / availability choice for some?

Yes I quoted the wrong post in my last answer :). Actually it was originally a one ten and was shortened to a ninety. It may not be an authentic assembly line build but as Eric Morecambe once said "it has all the rights notes but not necessarily in the right order".
