    Sickly engine question

Can all relax now - was just a connection joint letting air into the pump!

    Sickly engine question

Hello folks! Time for an update which, as you can guess, that means things ain't running smoothly at the moment. In July last year, I bought a new pump from Mick Ogdens, and it was running fine up until last weekend. All of the sudden, it just died (got that 'feeling' whilst driving just before...

    Sickly engine question

Well injector pumps work for ages, and then die I guess - the recon one which I bought from the UK could have been reconned 5 or 10 years ago, I don't know - always fail outside warranty period! My original pump could have been reconned, but it would have been done at least 10 years or more ago...

    Sickly engine question

Thanks jamesmartin! All a little academic now as I think I have found the problem. New lifter pump fitted and primed with NO air as per the diesel filter overspill pipe, or the blanked off plug on the top of the filter casing. Same for the bleed screw on top of the injector pump body. New lifter...

    Sickly engine question

A quick question about the cam shaft - I notice there is a lobe on it which actuates the lifter pump arm. Does anyone know where the lobe is in relation to the markings (tdc?) on the crankshaft pulley wheel? I'd like to get the lobe on the opposite side to the pump, as I've noticed there is more...

    Sickly engine question

Thanks Jamesmartin - I recall you helped me loads last time! Will take off rocker box cover tomorrow and see if if I have any bent rods or sticky valves to start with. Hadn't noticed any loss of coolant, or oil in radiator, or overheating issues in the run up to this. I have a new lifter pump...

    Sickly engine question

Hello all - haven't been on in a long time because I haven't had any problems - until now! A recap - I run a London Taxi with the LR Defender 2.5 NA diesel (with Sherpa timing case). The engine was rebuilt by Turner Engineering about 18 months ago, and it has been running like a dream - even...

    Diesel strip and rebuild 2.5

The Sherpa glow-plugs were seemingly used because of their very fast heat up time - it is a taxi, it had to start and go! NGK Y-208T

    Diesel strip and rebuild 2.5

So basically rag the arse off it, leave the timing alone until its all settled in and don't worry. Sounds like a good plan! By the way, I have found out from a taxi mechanic that I have the wrong glow plugs - seems I should be fitting the Sherpa type which glow in 3 to 7 seconds! (second...

    Diesel strip and rebuild 2.5

New gaskets top, bottom and rear. New seals (head tightened to 30NM, then 60NM, then 90NM and finally 130NM), new cam shaft, followers and push-rods. New oil pump, fuel lifter and diesel filter. New piston rings. Runs, but just smokes like a bitch (CAV timing still be worked on). Are you...

    Diesel strip and rebuild 2.5

Fuel system bled - started within 20 seconds! But damn is there a lot of white/light grey smoke coming out of this monster! Set the garage smoke alarm off twice! Any suggestions on what to check/adjust? http://www.london-taxi.at/smoke.mp4

How much does the motor weigh?

Did the hoist collapse? I need an extra 5 cms reach (don't we all!!) to seat it on the engine mountings and it's bloody annoying me!

    Diesel strip and rebuild 2.5

Thanks for the warning! According to the handbook, there are 4 bleed points do deal with. Before the rebuild I could get 65mph, and the max speed is quoted as 70mph - I was just dripping a lot of oil, which with the new seals should be better! Will be putting the motor back in tomorrow all...

    World of weird! Injector problem!

Hi Zeaphod - also been ill - thanks for replying - I have now installed and tightened the injectors to the correct torque, together with the steel cup washer and brass washer - I'm sure everything is in order, so I reckon I will see if I have problems with starting before I need any visual...

    Diesel strip and rebuild 2.5

Well samc88, my profile picture will give you a clue! A London Taxi! The motor is the 2.5N/A with a Sherpa timing case, the gearbox is a BorgWarner BW40.

Sam's 2.5 N/A diesel strip down and rebuild thread

Here's the next poser. I have ordered new injectors and glow plugs. The glow plugs are part number ERC8450, but they bear no resemblance to the plugs that were in the engine (picture below). I did notice that putting the new plugs in would result in a hard start (resistor needed?). Do any of...
