Newbie.. found and bought a landy

I have read loads of ebay motors listings and you get to tell which ones are the dodgy ones, and that one doesnt sound like a con artist. The outrigers are not hard to replace, neither are they expensive, some knowledge of welding is required though. Hope you enjoy your landy. :welcome2:

Advice sought on Landy project for newbie...

To be legal you will probably need an engineers report that says the shortening of the chassis has been done, and the engineers report must be dated before the changes came in effect which I think was the mid 90's, I'm guessing you dont have that so there isnt really a legal way registering and...

could I have some help please??

Thats all good, I'll just add, your comment of 'change in magnetic field', this marrys with my comment of charge build up, the magnetic field 'builds up' slowly due to inductance and is then converted back into an electrical charge (as well as other sources of energy you mentioned). To expand...

    alternative to welding

From the recent threads I think my set probably isnt for you. Its a brit made multiweld 180amp single phase industrial set, it has a copper wound transformer, output choke and a capacitor bank, it comes with a part bottle of c02, a part roll of 0.8mm wire and a brand new iec euro torch with a...

could I have some help please??

Pobs circumstance is correct, but the reason isnt so much 'build up'. Whats happened is that the coil has had power to it continuously as mentioned. The coil is sposed to be pulsed, a charge is built up in the coil, in the form of a magnetic field, and then dissapated as a spark when the...

    series 2a,v6 water temp sensor

Never heard of one, you might be as well to take the fanimold and series 2 sender to a engineering shop and ask them to bash out the fanimold to the thread of the sender, or if the hole is too big for the sender then make an adaptor.

    any taboo's

Seen a landy in bling. Looked like a fat chick wearing suspenders. Needless to say, didnt suit.

    Chassis suspension bushes.

I used 16mm threaded bar and fecked it up, didnt really wanna go much bigger as I was concerned aboot squishing the chassis so I opted to surgically remove them. Just dont get em stuck half way in when fitting the newuns.

    alternative to welding

I'm not gonna make any comments as to what to do or where to buy, however I'm gonna say that I have a professional weld set for sale at the kind of price you'd buy a crappy new one, and I'm near lancaster. If its a structural joint then you have to seam weld it for the mot, your allowed to...

    series 3 power steering

Looks like you have a choice, pay the dough, or faff about working it out for yourself. There is a range rover steering box that fits over the axle, but they are getting hard to get now, the other way is to fit the disco/deffy steering but that means cutting and moveing the front crossmember...

    Dead battery

Numax are the cheaper end of batteries, however a 110 is about right in my opinion for a diesel, I think an 85 is standard but the extra amps you'll be glad of on a cold January morning.

    Chassis suspension bushes.

I made something like rusty's too out of an old shocker, didnt work, ended up using a pneumatic saw to just cut through the outer steel tube of the bush, then bash the segments out, sort of curling them round an out leaving something that resembles a quaver on the 'shop floor. Frezzing them...

    transit diesel engine

If you get a later tranny engine with yellow spot injectors you get a 140hp lump that'll pull like a train. Better sticking to a landy engine though.

    r380 gear box?

Ashcrofts do the kit for it. If your ruff I believe it can be done with a grinder.

    r380 gear box?

Hughsey is right, and I think your getting the uj's mixed up, the ones we are talking about are not the ones you can see underneath, they are inside the axle tube inside the swivel housings at the ends. If you google half shaft photos for defender and series you'll see that a series half shaft...

    transit diesel engine

I thought about it, but realised that the tranny engine allthough ok isnt very good, and yes the engine needs an adaptor plate and also needs special mount brackets. Re sale value wont be that great with a tranny engine. Unless your skint put the 200 tdi in.

    Insurance funny

Is that all, take out 2 policys to make sure. My 109" 300tdi, with td5 intercooler, disco axles, disco wheels, nothing original is less then 200 notes. Think you'd better tell your insurance company where to stick it. There has been some pretty major increases in insurance premiums, partly...

    First (?) Series 2A

Yep sounds like the right decision. No one has any dough at times like these esp after crimbo, you'll get a better deal if you hold out.

    r380 gear box?

The r380 will go in, but you'll need to either have special props made, or move the engine forward, shorter props on a swb are not a good idea, better stick with the series 'box. Disco diffs are a good idea I have them on mine, the gearing still wont be tall enough even with them, but a lot...

    Vacuum advance

Some engines have the vac advance tube going into the fanimold, maybe the carb you mentioned is for one of these. If the engine dies when revved then if it just dies its short of fuel which might be the throttle pump setting within the carby, or if it tries to rev up then dies its too much fuel.
