Could well be that, one way to check (and I've used this to good effect in the past) is to put the car in 1st gear (with handbrake on!) and slowly bring the clutch to biting point - have an assistant observe the engine mounts when you do this to see if there is excessive movement in any of them.

A lot depends on the type of usage they have had throughout their lifetime - for instance if they've spent a lot of time by the sea there is a good chance corrosion will be bad, if the previous owners haven't kept the chassis and bodywork clean of mud/salt it is also likely they have corroded...

Ok...got this sorted out. The 'replacement' water pump I fitted (from a local LR independent) located the pulley a few mm closer to the engine block than it should have done...I've used some thick washers between the pulley and pulley mounting to bring it back out to the correct position and...

Interesting how the advert makes no mention of the fact the car is smashed to f**k. Must be a category B write off with that damage, so £7900+VAT for the engine and running gear (provided that hasn't been damaged as well!)
