Looking at buying this ex-SAS Range Rover...

Very interesting. Assuming no problems with the dreaded tin-worm, why not?

    MOT Fail...P38

MACWY, as enery8 says doing airbags singly is not a good idea, and if they`re failing due to old age the front`uns won`t be far behind. As they leak they`ll soon shag out the air-pump too. If you use a non Landy garage make sure they know what they`re about or they could put the EAS into fault...

Mystery P38 problem.... Circulation / overheating...

I know nowt about the LPG system, but would have suggested getting a sniff test done at a garage. If negative you can then discount slipped liners h-gasket etc. Seems thats been done. How long were you running with no anti-freeze? Coupla weeks shouldn`t have done much harm, but remember it acts...

    Hiclones.

If you like that, have you tried "http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html" ? Seems to me more well written, plain language, info. Busts a few more myths. And he`s selling nowt!

    Hiclones.

If you got half hour to spare read "www.fuelsaving.info/debunk". Dealers stock `em `cause they can sell `em for a profit. (Any dealers actually recommending `em would make me think twice about their.... honesty... tho). Most claims are anecdotal, and not precise. Etc etc. Pump up your tyres...

    Starting Problem

Since you`ve only had the vehicle a few weeks, suggest a full service: all filters (air, fuel, oil), change oils in engine, gearbox, transfer box, axles, all grease nipples, etc. Check all brake pads, pipes, hoses, discs. Check all steering joints, linkages etc. I don`t believe much of what any...

    Starting Problem

CAREFUL ! If the sedimentor hasn`t been touched lately it may well break if you put a lot of strain on it. Darren is right to say treat it gently. The drain plug is made of crap plastic and can break when removing it. Plastic drain plug and washer are on e-bay for about a fiver, and depending...

    Tyre squeal

Agree sounds like duff V-C unit. You can take off one (front) prop and run around like that until you`re ready to fit new one. As jamesmartin said can be done in situ, about 3 or 4 hours (for us amateurs), and part was about £325 from island4x4 when I did mine. Good set axle stands, torque...

    2 inch sus lift...

The standard springs should have colour codes: rear are brown/green or orange/orange. Front do seem to be handed and different for petrol and diesel. (whole rainbow of colours there!). RAVE lists weights for diesel as: UNLADEN F 1040 R 1015 Total 2055 MAX F 1200 R 1650 Total...

    More damn problems...brakes this time

I tried it single handed, with only limited success. The pedal would drop overnight and have to be given a quick press in morning to get it back up. Only got the system right with assistance. Get a 2nd person, if you can, & follow RAVE. It DOES make a difference.

P38, Cutting out on overrun/slowing down.

Sensor or #4 is start of injection sensor, RAVE explains it better than me in diesel injection chapter. Best tested on Testbook. About £140 to buy. Can replace DIY (if you handy and have correct spanners). If you do replace it change the small hose at rear of block under air manifold: costs...

    More damn problems...brakes this time

Quick word: when you come to bleed `em do it as per RAVE; doing it normal way (starting at furthest corner etc) does get brakes working, but not too well. By the book.

    P38 Certificate of Conformity

Hi `96 P38 Diesel. Phoned them first then sent off cheque with request and VIN number. Haven`t got any details now tho`. (Got it registered here before it was 10 yr old, our dept hikes up the fee for a carte gris on older cars)

    Which is cheapest to run

Think that a 300tdi Disco is prob the cheapest to run. You may get more mpg from a manual rather than auto, but not vastly more. Unless you`re feeling lucky, don`t go anywhere near a Rangie at the lower price range: there are loads of money pits and just a few good `uns.

    what to buy?

Itchy feet? Looking for a change? I do understand. If you`re set on a P38 look at the threads on buying `em. It seems there are good `uns out there, but lots of money pits too! If you`re prepared to work on `em yourself, and it sounds like you`re handy with a set of spanners, they are...

    Should I take the plunge??

Check starting from cold & hot starting. Check engine is cold when you arrive__ he may have had it running to pump up air if it`s been leaking! Leave cheque book at home___ you can guarantee he`ll say "better buy it now, someone else is coming etc". Reading your 2nd post me-thinks you`ll need to...

    Idiot

Hope you looked to see if there`s any oil in the engine too while the bonnet was up? And no goo around the oil filler cap....

    what to buy?

Gotta agree there, try testing all of `em, and go buying with eyes wide open, a very suspicious attitude and fingers crossed!

    Should I take the plunge??

As I hinted, get under it and check the air-bags, if original, they`re due a change. Basically a nuts `n` bolts job, half a day to a long day depending on what equipment you`ve got, and four or five hundred quid. Check and double correct function of EAS and air-con.

P38 DSE leaking diesel + HEVAC fault

I sold my P38, a few months ago, after 5 or 6 years of ownership, and bought a 300tdi Disco. It`s a lot less refined, but I sleep better nights now, with no nightmares about EAS and premonitions of doom from the other gremlins. The car I sold is still going well, but I`ve no regrets.
