try holding it towards the gear you want to select (high or low) with your foot on the clutch and the gearbox in gear, then keep the transfer leaver pushed (or pulled) an gently lift the clutch up, might work, might not.......

Cheers for that about RAVE, will have a look myself on there after, could it be that it says its on the left hand side of the engine meaning left hand side of the car? as from the front that would then be the right hand side wouldn't it?

cheers for that chris, did yours have any letters in the number at all? as i can see a number on the block by where chaser suggested, yet this ones a manual too (had the box out to do the clutch but didn't see anything above the bellhousing at all? Cheers, Steve.

is it just me or does it say its on an E reg in the description but its a private plate in the pics?

starter jamming? have you listened through a screwdriver or something for the grinding? and as above, check all earths, if unsure, take them off and clean them

aint black smoke un burnt fuel? and wouldn't it be burning oily white smoke if the turbo had blown? is the injection pump timed up ok?

If you recondition the valve block yourself (or a garage) with new o-rings and diaphragm valve that should see it right for a while as long as the springs and compressor are in good condition, the o-ring kits are pretty cheap on e-bay at the moment too and don't take more than 1 and a half hours...
