Freelander 1 Yet another VCU thread

It's ok, my trolley-jack and axle stands look much like the ones above. The stands are 6-tonne. If I need to turn the shafts to reach the nuts, I might leave the back end up on the stands, bring the jack round to the front and lift the wheels just off the ground, turn them, then put the front...

Freelander 1 Yet another VCU thread

By the way, I assume there's no problem with driving the car around for a couple of weeks with the propshafts missing? I think I've heard of people doing this long-term rather than replacing the VCU... Pete

Freelander 1 Yet another VCU thread

Now that's a proper job - but I don't have one of those beasts and I'm not going to get or make one for a one-off. Got a club hammer and some scrap bar though :-) Pete

Freelander 1 Yet another VCU thread

That's an interesting idea. I don't love going under a car on stands (and I usually leave the jack in position and lightly loaded, as backup) but I put up with it. I do have some concrete blocks (breeze-block size, but solid) which I could maybe drive up onto - how far does the car need to roll...

Freelander 1 Yet another VCU thread

Ok - so undo the flange bolts both ends, and the mounting bolts for the VCU bearings, and drop the whole lot off in one piece? What's the best order to do it all in? I guess I could take out all but one of the flange bolts each end, and half of the VCU ones, before I need to worry what comes...

Freelander 1 Yet another VCU thread

Taken my eye off this thread for a bit, but I've just ordered the kit from Bell this morning. It'll arrive some time next week, but I might not be able to fit it for a little while. Every time I go round a corner now I'm thinking of the poor IRD grinding away :-). I do have some time this...

Freelander 1 Yet another VCU thread

No unusual behaviour, and I wouldn't call it a hunch either - to be honest I was expecting another good result, the extended time was a bit of a disappointment. When James and I did the original test in 2014, I always intended to re-test regularly. This is just the first time I've got round to...

Freelander 1 Yet another VCU thread

I meant the replacement, not refilling the unit itself. I'll almost certainly buy from Bell, but somebody still has to put the thing on the car. Pete

Freelander 1 Yet another VCU thread

Thanks guys - I took three goes and they were all about the same speed. Unfortunately the idea of the temperature didn't occur to me till afterwards when I'd packed everything away, but I'll test it again after a drive soon. Sounds like Bell are the answer for a supplier, I've seen them...

Freelander 1 Yet another VCU thread

Hi guys, Six months after I bought this car, a work colleague (jtq4u on here) told me about the famous VCU issue, and we did a test: The time then, 38 seconds, was deemed very good, so I thought nothing of it for a few years. Today, two and a half years later, I decided it was about time I...

    TD4 clutch slipping

Yep, manual. Sorry, should have said. That fits, yes. I was a bit worried that it might suddenly let me down when pulling out at a junction etc; as long as it only happens in higher gears it's annoying but not dangerous. But obviously it needs to be fixed. Since posting I found a thread...

    TD4 clutch slipping

Hi, I have a 56-plate Freelander TD4 that's done 70-something thousand miles. Recently I've noticed that sometimes if I put my foot down sharply, the revs shoot right up for a second without the car changing speed, then the revs drop down a bit and the car speeds up to meet them. I assume this...
