I think you have to be pretty dumb to fit a '2wd' IRD. You do realise you can fit a regular IRD and not connect a propshaft...? At least then someone could have the option of fitting the propshaft and a proper VCU. Now you have ruined that possibility and invalidated your insurance, and whoever...

Well the old Rangies had 50:50 and their VCUs coped well enough, and when they gave up the ghost, they didn't knacker everything else, probably due to the 50:50, or more likely the better design strength of the transfer case over the IRD. The pick up of the VCU is microseconds from what I read...

I could probably double what I paid for mine going by the crazy prices the dealers are knocking like vehicles down here....

Yeah, funny that- I replaced my VCU (takes no time) and all is well! I would like to change the diff ratios if I could to give 50:50 drive front:rear but can't see anyone who could do that. But that's all I would do unless I could lower 1st and 2nd gears a bit more.

...and are not suitable for all bush applications, such as the big rear subframe bushes on VWs. They don't rotate enough so the inner metal bush grinds the poly bush part until there is movement of the wrong kind.Ok for wishbones and diff mounts though! ;)

Can't see how a hi lift jack can be used on a Freelander, nor why you should want too. I use a bottle jack that fell out the back of my Pajero when I sold it. Very useful tool... Today it helped get my undertray on. I use the standard scissor jack for lifting the car and not had any worries...

Oh dear... could be the VCU. I'd use the adjusters to back off the brake shoes to rule them out, then if it'#s still like it, I'd read up on the VCU tests on here.
