Happened to me a few times, usually clears when you take key out then lock and unlock the car with the fob. If it doesn't clear then I'd guess a stuck sensor or relay. cheers!

Just to make sure we're on the same page- the drag link connects steering box to passenger side wheel and the track rod connects the two wheels together at the back. The track rod on your disco should be two part, the main bar with the steering damper bracket with the passenger side ball joint...

i know this sounds stupid but is the transfer box good for oil? mates defender wouldn't come out of diff lock and we found his tbox was low on oil, filled it up and with a bit of forward/backwards it came free. if not then the linkage could be bent or need adjusting i suppose

That sums it up for me, granted it's his car and his money and whilst I think he's stupid wasting a car like that the fact that if something went wrong and someone was injured is what seals it; they would be waiting god knows how long for professional help.
