Series 3 Transfer box question - turning wheels by hand with vehicle raised

When one rear wheel is raised off the ground and turned by hand, the front propshaft also moves. To be able to rotate the rear wheel by hand, I also have to raise one front wheel. This is with the transfer box set to 2WD (yellow lever in the up position). It does the same with the red lever...

Series 3 2.25 diesel glow plug upgraded help.

The instructions on the diagram say "retain ballast resistor" which makes it seem like it still needs to be in the circuit. I left mine in place on the bulkhead, but simply attached the ignition live wire to the same terminal as the wire that feeds the plugs. I attached one ring terminal for...

Can’t think of another word for it so ‘shuddering’

As I found out, there is no way to tell if the yoke eyes are stretched or corroded until you disassemble it and remove the bearing cups. A replacement is the right way to go in my opinion. You also risk distorting or breaking the yoke eyes trying to remove the old bearing cups if they are...

Can’t think of another word for it so ‘shuddering’

A complete replacement propshaft is not that expensive. It will also be fully balanced. if the UJs and sliding splines are regularly greased it should last for years. I replaced both when I rebuilt my Series. I found that the bearing cups were loose in the yoke bores at one end of the first...

    What Chassis is This??

If there is a Chassis number, could you apply for a V5 and build a vehicle onto it? Could it cause problems for you or someone else if another vehicle with the same number built onto another chassis is already on the road?

    Series 3 Oil filter assembly

The threads look cleaner than the rest of the adaptor. Is it possible that it was capped off and the cap vibrated loose until it fell off?

Classic White 1987 two door classic with Perkins Diesel?

If it was a common conversion, did Perkins supply these engines new from the factory? I have read that the VM diesels were less forgiving when neglected than other types. Is that true? I know of someone still driving a H reg classic with a 200Tdi that was fitted after the VM engine died.

Classic White 1987 two door classic with Perkins Diesel?

A relative of mine had a white two door RRC that according to them was fitted with a Perkins diesel engine. It was apparently a 1987 E Reg. I remember it having the same type of three spoke alloy wheels as the drawing at the top of this page, although can't be 100% certain. It developed a...

Series 3 2.25 diesel - running temp with snapped fan belt

I haven't ever seen many threads about overheating damage to four cylinder petrol or diesel Series engines on here. Are these engines not known for it?

Series 3 2.25 diesel - running temp with snapped fan belt

Are cast iron blocks and heads less likely to be damaged by overheating if spotted quick enough? I have read that it can be too late for aluminium engines by the time the gauge even moves.

    Exhaust repair

I was just thinking if it was a reason for an over-keen police officer to give the driver a hard time.

    Exhaust repair

Do rules about exhaust noise limits apply to vehicles over 40 years old and MOT exempt? As far as I knew if it had a silencer from the factory, then legally it had to have one fitted to be used on the road.

Modern sealed batteries and Series Electrics

Thanks for the replies. If it was a vehicle I needed to rely on I would buy a new battery.

Modern sealed batteries and Series Electrics

I have read that modern sealed batteries are not suitable for older vehicles. These batteries are said to need variable charging voltages, which modern vehicles are designed to provide. A Series alternator apparently does not produce enough voltage to properly charge one of these batteries...

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

It's good to know you got it going again. It will also become tax and MOT exempt in a couple of years time which is an upside.

    E10 Petrol

From what I have read, the premium 97 or 99 octane petrol will still be sold as E5 for now.

Series 3 Brake fail - update

I find putting a smear of red rubber grease on the threads helps. It also keeps air out during the bleeding process. Are they cast iron or aluminium wheel cylinders? If they are aluminium, they steel nipple can often seize due to dissimilar metal corrosion.

Series 3 SPEEDI-SLEEVE what size for late 1984 stub axle?

It is worth hanging onto the old one as it can be machined by someone with the right skills.

Series 3 SPEEDI-SLEEVE what size for late 1984 stub axle?

Would it be possible to locate an earlier type stub axle with the separate land? The land could be replaced before starting the job. As far as I know, if you know anyone who is competent with a lathe, the worn out one piece axle could be modified to accept a replaceable land once it had been...

    Series 3 diesel alternator

If I was doing it, I would spend bit extra for good quality name branded bearings for a rebuild. The same happened with a no-name alternator that I fitted to an old diesel Shogun. The bearings on the new replacement were a lot louder from the start. The alternator was still working when the...
