Freelander 1 L series Diesel stuck in cold start mode

No worries, ask your dad in law if he definitely used BOTH pins when timing it - the HPFP pulley pin and the crank pin and confirm the pump pulley bolt was at no time loosened in any way - which also obviously means that at no time was the Pulley ever removed from the HPFP. all the above points...

Freelander 1 TD4 Stuck in Gear, clutch or gearbox?

For uk prices I am not the one to ask, @Alibro seems to trade in them or is a masochist :p I am sure Ali or others will give you a good valuation. The commercial reduces value as well - I would have thought about 300 or 400 but I am well out of touch with uk rates.

Freelander 1 TD4 Stuck in Gear, clutch or gearbox?

St Mary's Isles of Scilly :) -off the pointy bit where you are located lol..... Yes, she is a lovely yott. a Seastream 34 (Ian Anderson design) Hull was originally designed as a pure Fastnet racer (sloop rigged) in the mid 70's called an 'offshore 34' ...

Freelander 1 TD4 Stuck in Gear, clutch or gearbox?

Hi Monkfish. Does it locate reverse ok with engine off - ie : - engages and disengages ? - if so unlikely to be linkage issues. (but certainly worth checking) I am wondering if there is a very slight clutch drag. The Change to SMF from a DMF would indicate a past issue. Is there any evidence of...

    04 Td4 case study (solved)

:) Yes definitely - I will start the ball rolling - There are so many threads on here about Td4 performance problems - what about a checklist sticky? Something like... Check intercooler hoses for splits...

    Freelander Project IV (Bertie)

Might be a tad expensive for adjustable one - Maybe homemade - cut, drill tap and rosejoint ? - or preferably the quality cheap way - cut -carefully fit external sleeve ie - (hack it in half and bash a bit of pipe over it) - then adjust length and weld it.

Is it only reverse ? (ps - whats the 'yott' you are 'driving' ;))

    Freelander Project IV (Bertie)

Yes, agreed, it will have pulled off a bit of positive no doubt. The rear camber should be adjustable more than the camber bolts by the traverse rod... Rear toe in is also expected to increase (from first observations) but I can see little one can do about that.

clutch goes, then is ok after bleeding??

Sounds more like air is getting into the system under certain circumstances. Pressure bleeding is done from the top of the master cylinder providing you can get a fitting on it. - I have never done a TD4 so have no first hand experience of pressure bleeding it - but that is the recommended way...

    Freelander Project IV (Bertie)

Hi Ali, I presume the issue is excessive positive ? - it may be that you have hit the limit on the camber bolts ... hopefully not. - maybe just a tweak needed. If there is an issue, the usual way is to fabricate and fit fixed or adjustable camber plates at the strut tops to bring the 3 bolt...

Max engine size for LR Freelander 1

Excellent info thanks -regarding the above - actually there is another PG1 that has a fixed RH support shaft (as such) - the Freelander ;) In this case a humongous shaft on equally humongous bearings :) I also noted the non metal caged units in the diff carrier.. .. I am sure they...

Max engine size for LR Freelander 1

Hi Nodge, from the amount of research I have done ref the PG1, the 'weakest' point or common issue with increased torque appears to be in the area of the differential / diff support bearings. I would have thought that this area was not much of an issue on the freelander as a lot of the 'standard...

    Td4 auto gearbox prob

In most cases Nodge ;) it is caused by an alleged 'land rover 'mechanic' ' (and I use that term VERY loosely!) ...supposedly looking at it - scratching his nuts (closest to his brain) and instead of saying - "honestly mate - I ain't got a clue about these" - they just peddle BS.....:rolleyes...

Freelander 1 Anyone investigated 'clicking' starter solenoid - design problem??

With the other symptoms you describe - loss of trip data etc AND a normal start by connecting the battery to the solenoid activation coil (even if battery V is low as you indicated), then it is almost certainly not the solenoid. The solenoid would also NOT cause issues with the trip meter etc. A...

clutch goes, then is ok after bleeding??

Hi, I would change the clutch master cylinder if you are 100% certain that you are not losing fluid. Get one from a breakers as they are pretty bomb proof. There is no way at all that you should have to bleed the system on a regular basis. It is either leaking fluid or drawing air into the...

Max engine size for LR Freelander 1

Interesting... I can see a possibility with an adaptor plate for the L series U box onto the T ....have you any details ? - here is that thread btw.... there is quite a bit of info regarding the bell housing shapes etc https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/tips-on-4x4-ownership-please.305315/

Max engine size for LR Freelander 1

Hi MTH, we were discussing this on a fred the other day - the freelander L series does not use the normal L series bellhousing - it uses a K series pattern (specific to the freelander)-There is an end plate for the L series that fits the M/T series box - on that fred Nodge pointed out that the...
