Update: I finally got my power back! I went for cleaning out the intercooler. Whilst I was taking things apart I found the rubber connection into the inlet manifold was loose. It must have been like this since I changed the gearbox in the summer. When I put everything back together...

Fixed it. Yes the calliper guide pin should be free. I took off the caliper holder, held the pin in the vice and then wiggled until it was free.

The backplates on the pads look exactly like the old ones, but maybe the surface is too thick. I am still thinking that about this top caliper guide pin. It is fixed, but has a rubber boot over it and looks exactly like the lower one. It would be good if someone could confirm whether it is...
