Fwiw, the play is rotational, no lift. If you assume the diff flange to be a clock face, I can turn it about 2 hours, I.e, from 9 to 11 if that makes sense.

Should have added, after bleeding I can leave it running at idle for hours. Only after lifting revs to approx 2000 does the noise re-appear.

Thanks Jim, is the roof lining a pig to come down? front end looks not too bad, but looks like all the trim round the rear windows has to come off to get the back down.

If you are getting a "clicking" noise, then I would be looking at the starter motor itself. If the wiring to it is ok, then sounds like a starter motor fault to me. Get a test light to see if you are getting a signal to the small wire when you try to turn over, if so, then its a motor fault.

251,000 miles on mine. Not had it long, but got loads of dealer history with it. Mabye someday, once I get bored of watching paint dry, I'll get round to reading it in detail. Waiting for EGR removal kit to arrive, should be here in a day or 2, hopefully wil fix the lack of power below 2000rpm.

Not wishing to confuse the issue, but DJB, is your disco Auto or Manual? I had a fault on mine, (now fixed) but can only effect manual TD5's. I wont go into details just yet, as to keep things simple, but is yours is not auto, then i might have something for you to check, (not electrical)
