Post in the TD5 or Defender section and/or do a search under "exhaust manifold gasket leak"

    Good trailer connector?

Try these. Little bit fiddly to put together with 7 core cable (they use screw terminals) but make good waterproof connectors. Fairly common in the marine trade. Sure they're available in other places too. http://www.bulgin.co.uk/PDFs/Cat83_sections/Buccaneer-2010_standard.pdf

    Defender TD5 - screeching noise

Described to me as sounding like a dentists drill. I did all the belts/idlers/tensioner and it was the exhaust manifold gasket. With the turbo heatshield off and spray some wd40 around, you could see it blowing bubbles. One broken stud. I was quite lucky and only broke one other getting the...

Water Injection Cleaning for running on Veggie anyone do it?

I think you might be getting mixed up with turbo cleaning. That is a recognised way of cleaning turbos. I think you have to be a bit careful though. If you overdo it, you could hydraulic the engine. Or are you talking about water/methanol injection like they use on dragsters which may not be...

    ACE Pipes

Hijacking the thread very slightly, I have a leak from one of the pipes on the manifold block. It looks like a bit of a sod of a job to replace the seals so as its not too bad, I'll keep it topped up until I can get round to it. However, is it an MOT failure? If it is, I've got to fix it.

    smart battery chargers

We use them all the time on boats where you often need to leave them connected to shore power for long periods. All the ones I have seen are 4 stage switch mode chargers and I usually end up fitting Sterling chargers. The desulpahting aspect I have heard about. A lot of them claim to recover...

    Diesel injector problem

You should be getting fuel out of the returns. Some engines return 4 times as much fuel as they use. I would suggest that maybe the injectors are stuck open. Are you sure you put them back together properly? Might be worth getting them checked out by a diesel specialist. Word of warning though...

    Parts shop in London?

There's Autopost in Wimbledon for Landie parts. Don't know of any other specialists in London but there must be some. Land Rover Parts Specialists // AutoPost The idea of one street with all the same type of shops on it doesn't really happen in the UK. I have seen it overseas though, mainly in...

    Stearing problems!! (Defender 110 2006)

Disco's often make a groaning noise from the power steering. Its something to do with the vibration of the fluid flowing through the pipes. Don't know if it applies to Defenders. there is a service bulletin on Rave somewhere. Its not meant to be a problem.

    Headlight/Brake fault

Here's a good one. Our 300tdi 110 has an interesting electrical fault. When you put press the brake pedal, the headlights ( and side lights) glow dimly. Its obviously a short somewhere but has an anyone seen this before as its going to be a sod to find. Ta in advance.

    New TFL Emmision Charge!?

Low emission zone has got nothing to do with your vehicles actual emissions. Its all to do with the emission standard commercial vehicles were manufactured to. Putting biodiesel in the tank or adjusting IP's isn't going to have any effect on whether the vehicle is exempt or not.

    Maximum towing weight...

Heaviest I've towed with my D1 was about 3 tonnes. You definitely know its there and I wouldn't recommend anyone tows a trailer that weight without a fair bit of experience. Only time I've been stopped was for towing too fast (not 3 tonnes I hasten to add) and for faulty trailer lights (they...

    Desicions, decisions......help!

Facelift model. Though, what year is it? Plate says 2002. Dealer says 2004. You are paying a bit of a premium through a dealer though. I just got a 2000 TD5 with 96000 miles for £5000. Private sale though so no comeback. I think the second one is a bit overpriced. Pays your money and takes your...

    Help needed

Snaking at low speed usually means there is not enough nose weight on the caravan. The 60mph limit used to only apply when the trailer was a certain percentage of the towing vehicle weight. I just found this which appears to say otherwise. http://www.indespension.co.uk/b2c/jsp/FAQ.pdf Either...

    Overcharging Problem

If the battery is gassing like that and the alternator output is now OK then the battery is shot. Get a new one before it dies. Apart from anything else, on a Defender the fumes are likely to end up in the cab with you. Not pleasant.

    heavy smoker

Gummed up inlet manifold from the EGR. Intercooler needs cleaning out as possibilities. There is somewhere on here advise on how to adjust the injection pump. If its out it can cause smoking. Could be dirty injectors. Injector cleaner in the tank wouldn't do any harm.

    disco interior lights

You can get relays which have built in adjustable timers. Just connect the feed to interior lights to the trigger circuit on the relay and the switched output on the relay to the lights. Look at Maplins or RS components for the relays. Not too difficult to do but, no, you can't just adjust the...

    London Low Emission Zone

Disco's aren't included. Only commercially derived vehicles which means Defenders. It is however possible to get your Defender reclassified in some cases. there is a long running thread about this somewhere. By the way, early TD5's (I think pre 2002) are not exempt. They have to be Euro...

Why are Defender Seats so expensive?

We fitted a re-trim kit from Paddocks. Probably not as good as Exmoor but lot cheaper. Seems to do the job OK
