Autocar - history of the Range Rover

Haven't read it, but sounds like another piece of dramatic generalization about P38's. I know some of the build quality is 'ify' and they have more than their fair share of funny quirks, but my experience of ownership has been better than a lot of motors I've owned over the years. Listening to...

    Seat ECU Overhaul

The seat switch has started working the mirrors and not the seats on the LSE so I guess after 20 years the ECU battery has decided to empty its contents and added something else to the 'TO DO' list:( Replacing with new seems to be a non starter and second hand are rare and still rather pricey...

    2.5 Diesel lack of Power

50 mph uphill whilst towing, sounds like you've got a goodun to me:D Sorry just an old petrol head having a cheap laugh!!

london, battery sales, where to buy?

Just picked up an Exide battery for my Classic from Eurocarparts in Wembley for £88 inc vat. Higher CCA than a lot out there and came with a 3 year warranty. Probably could have got cheaper off the net but I like to be able to take batteries back if there is an issue.

    gearbox auto overheat

Mine was a sensor issue, an easy diagnosis in mine as it used to come on from first start up during the middle of winter!! Easy fix in my case as it the connection wasn't a 100%. A bit of fiddling and it hasn't been on since.

    Pinking underload

Dodgy MAF sensor? Mine was down on power and when I used to compensate with more throttle it used to Pink. New MAF sensor cured the power and pinking instantly.

    Another leak!

Could be the air con drain plugs are blocked. Lots of silt and crap on the road this time of year than get thrown in that direction. 2 rubber plugs either side of the bell housing, I usually use a straightened metal coat hanger to clear mine, expect an armful or eyeful of water if they haven't...

    4.6 OVERHEATING!!!! issues

As has been said go for genuine. I've had all sorts of issues with pattern stats. Don't be fooled by price when you see one for sale at +£30, that isn't genuine, they're above £60!!! Ridiculous I know but it does come in a nice plastic housing that seems to justify LR sticking £50 on the...

    Have you seen this ????????

I'd rather go to work in that instead of my Transit, after I had changed the wheels of course.

    Best one to buy

Have a test drive first, whilst the TD6 is an improvement over the 2.5 its no ball of fire and lagging well behind more modern diesel engines like the TDV8. V8 on gas is a nicer place to be:) My local indy hates the early L322's with a passion and can sort most issues on a P38 before it gets...

    Beginning to hate it

I feel your frustration at rusted bolts and the like, and you have been consistent in your criticism of LR over the years. But surely even a reliable Pajero is a step back to the dark ages, a P38 must be a better place to spend your time, even if its a diesel;) The Land Cruiser may be a step up...

bit of advice on selling peice

To get rid as it is probably not more than a grand. Sounds harsh but the market is littered with lots of second hand P38's and lots of them are going for £1500 in tidy condition. The fact you've had a back fire would suggest a single point gas system, which is old hat for a P38 these days and...

    To join the AA ?

I pay £37.00 a month for the AA. That includes me, 'er indoors' and the 2 boys (3rd just passed his test so need a quote for him to be included) That's everything covered including onward travel (hotel, car hire, train journey etc, etc) and first £500 of any repair on the P38. Can't fault the...

    To join the AA ?

Saint I'll be your friend, then you'll have 3 :D And I've got 2 RR's and a Transit van that can tow you home :)

    Recommended Brake Pads

Good choice. Had them on my last P38. Nothing special in the stopping department (although perfectly adequate) but hardly any build up in the brake dust department. Worth the extra for that alone.

    Coil Springs (again!!).....

Have a Classic that was originally on air. Converted when I got her. I replaced the springs that were on it with new one's from Paddocks that were listed as springs made specifically for the conversion (they do a kit for the P38 as well). A bit of a jittery hard ride on uneven tarmac but on the...

    To join the AA ?

Standard AA membership doesn't cover you for European travel. You're best to take out the cover just for the duration of the trip. The cover the AA provide is comprehensive and I don't leave blighty with out it in a Landy!!

    M51

Not that different. Whilst the 2.5 hits 60mph in a shade over 4 hours the 3.0 has been known to break the 4 hour barrier. One on board and down wind of course:)

Lots of new tyres out there who runs what ?

Had Avon Ranger Ice tyres on last winter and they got us to Northern Norway and back no problem. They'll go on again for winter. Although a good AT will get through most British winters. Only really got them for the Norway trip and got them cheap off flea bay at under £50 a corner. Don't know...
