Can you get a reliable decent Defender without having to pay over £8000

Mines got 128,000 painful bone jarring miles on the clock. Not all with the same engine mind you. Hardly even run in.

Can you get a reliable decent Defender without having to pay over £8000

I notice nobody admits to anything along the lines of "Yes I bought one and it looked like gold but turned out to be total dog ****". My 90, D-Reg (87), has a Disco 200tdi engine in it, uprated brakes (discs all round), a 2" lift kit, steering guard, diff guards, rear bench seats and is a...

    constant cutting out

Does it cut out with nothing else being changed or cut out when you, say, put on the indicator on or apply the brakes (brake lights go on)? I ask as you said it happened at night - so you will have had your headlights on. I had an issue with my Defender/90 where it cut out whenever I did...

How can I tell what sort of Gearbox I've got?

    Story of my life. Ta!

How can I tell what sort of Gearbox I've got?

Thanks very much, that's great. Do you know if the engine has more bolts or the gearbox? In other words - which one has too many for the other?

How can I tell what sort of Gearbox I've got?

Hi, I've a 1987 Defender/90 and want to know what gearbox I've got. It started life as a Turbo Diesel 2.5 and at some point since then it had an engine conversion to a Discovery 200tdi. If truth be told I think it was a bit of a bodge job but after various headaches it now works pretty well...

    1987 90 with disco 200tdi

Not a right lot of help this but I think it's too cheap! I've a 90 with a Disco 200tdi in mine and although it's fully functioning I'd hope to get a load more for it. Best of luck - it's a mint combination for someone (90 + 200tdi).

    Rights of Way Office

In fact Leeds has a whizzy new map online that you can just get all the information you want off it. It even includes stuff like roads that aren't really roads but are used as such (permissive I think they call them) and Byways (plus permissive byways). It's a lumpy file to use on your phone...

Paddock Diff Guards - hammer required?

Yes - North Yorks. Just north from Kidhow Gate and part of the Pennine Way. All 100% legal of course. It is one of those steps that forces you to reverse part way down to get a decent angle (it's sort of on a dog leg). I watched with horror as the 90 a couple of cars in front of me broke...

Paddock Diff Guards - hammer required?

My Profile Picture is the step in question by the way. Notice the diff splintering rocks just waiting to rip me bottom to shreds. *no, not that bottom.

Paddock Diff Guards - hammer required?

Cheers - that's something of a relief. I notice that they only cover the back of the diff and the actual bit that would be in contact with the ground is left in the original state. Presumably Land Rover knew what they were doing when they designed them though.

Paddock Diff Guards - hammer required?

Hi, I had the pleasure of doing Cam High Road at the weekend and then heading north and going the back way to Hawes. If you've done that way you'll know there's a dirty great stone step (as featured in LRM a couple of issues back) that isn't the easiest of downhills to negotiate. Just after...

RAC/AA for Off Road casualties - i.e. places most tow trucks can't get to

Don't get me wrong - I'm not daft all the time, nor do I take risks (well risks involving life and limb anyway) but sometimes you see somewhere you can go and you have a little look and see that you can go just a little distance quite safely. Then you go a bit further. Then you are almost...

RAC/AA for Off Road casualties - i.e. places most tow trucks can't get to

My attempts to scour the internet have thus far failed so apologies if it's yet another repeat thread. I live in Leeds, I've got a Defender 90 with a 200TDI and a huge number of problems. That's the Landy - not me. I was up on the moors north of Patley Bridge (North Yorkshire) the other...

My continuing Defender mystery - 200tdi exhaust downpipe

I have done lots of searching (please don't tell me off) and I can't find a topic exactly like this one. Exhibit A: If I've sussed how to use images you can hopefully see my downpipe connecting to the side of the turbo on my 200tdi (discovery version) that's on my 1987 90 (formerly...

Lights kill engine stone dead (any lights)

Cheers - I'll be getting the spanners out this weekend to fit some rear bench seats so I'll see if I can get my hands on a volt meter at the same time. I've asked my garage for a quote on replacing the alternator too just in case that's an easy (if expensive) fix.

Lights kill engine stone dead (any lights)

Do the instrument lights stay on when the engine stops? Yes - the battery light comes on as you'd expect if the engine stops. Does it start straight up again (dont have wait anytime) after its stops? Yes - starts up straight away, often when the machine is still rolling with no bother...

Lights kill engine stone dead (any lights)

I will give it a go. Just at work at the minute but determined to get it fixed. Thanks very much for the input.
