    Got pulled over this evening...

I had my Landy seized by Merseyside Police just as I came out of B&Q. They claimed it may have been stolen. Two weeks later I get a bill for £150 from the towing company but I can come and get my vehicle back as, surprise, surprise, it's not stolen. Inside I find the carpet ripped and the door...

    Central locking electrics (again)

If you are metering the resistance between the wires that go to the doors then yes, there should be resistance as you should be measuring the solenoid that operates the lock. One of my wires broke where the door hinges and the wires flex in the rubber tube. This makes sense why your fuse blows...

    Which caravan?

Caravan! If you spent £6000 to get a descent caravan you could go and stay in a £60 b+b 100 times instead. That's two weeks a year for 7 years and doesn't include caravan insurance, maintenance, etc etc........ No towing. Warm bed. Hot showers. Someone else cooks the full English in the...

    Double cab canopy

The lid hinges on a plate that is bolted on next to the back of the cab. Taking it all off would mean unbolting it, removing the six bolts, removing the gas strut attachment and then lifting it. This would take about 20 mins. If you wanted you could just pop the gas struts off their ball and...

    Defender 90

Had problems with the starter solenoid on my old Series III. Sometimes it would start, sometimes it would turn over too slow. If I shorted the solenoid it would start, pointing towards a bad solenoid. I think I could only get a combined starter/solenoid in those days....don't know if it has changed.

Death Wobble - A Story of Success!

For a while now I have had a slight wobble to the front wheels when I get over 50mph. The wobble would come and go - some days it was there, some days it was not. Then, as expected, it slowly got worse. To the stage that going over 50mph was dangerous as the steering wheel felt like it would...

Do these wings look dished on top?

You can get brand new wing tops from lrparts for £85. May be easier than using second had parts if your wing sides are ok..... http://www.lrparts.net/vehicle/defender/body-and-chassis/bodywork.html

    Charging additional battery/batteries

My dads' golf trolley runs around on a 12v battery. He has two...one on charge at home in the garage, one in the trolley. Even at 81 he manages to keep his trolley working when he needs it......

    Over revving

As the gearbox changes gear based on pressure of the ATF I would check the oil level first. Follow the correct procedure, don't just pull the dipstick out and have a look. It may be that you are a little low and it takes a while for the pressure to build.

    Odometer stuck

My odometer under reads by 1/3rd but the speed is spot on with my gps. The only solution it seems is to replace the speedo. The gears have probably stripped inside.

    Steering Box Output Shaft

Thanks for that James. I will get a seal on the way before I try to get the drop arm off!

    Steering Box Output Shaft

Hi Folks, Just had my MOT and the old girl passed! It did have an advisory for a weep from the steering box output shaft seal. Not having had a look yet but how hard are these to fit? Do I have to take off the impossible to remove drop arm and then prise the seal out? Or is it an easier job...

    I Should Have Checked!

Got several multimeters. That was what I was going to use to prove the switch was faulty! Used to work for IBM as a Technical Specialist so not used to getting greasy!

    I Should Have Checked!

I once rebuilt my sister in laws Chevette engine but could not get it run - just a backfire. It was only while sitting thinking about it a few days later and going through all the settings in my mind that I remembered I had set the tappits to 20thou......with my metric feeler gauges! So, that...

    I Should Have Checked!

Last year when I took my '97 300TDi for it's MOT I mentioned that the reversing light didn't work, I had changed the bulb and it had not worked so there was a reversing light switch on the passenger seat if they needed to change it. As it turns out the reversing light is not an MOTable item so...

    INTERMITENT PROBLEM

Why would the ignition switch stop the interior light from working? Don't know the answer but surely the interior light is wired direct to battery so it comes on when the door is opened not when you turn the key.

    Penny trick

Didn't work on my 300TDi so put a dab of high temp bearing grease on the grooved side of the belt. Quite as a mouse for six months then a new dob needed.
