Scotch a rear wheel , i take it as to wedge/ jam it ? i have not heard that one in a long time :D

Sorry should of said , i had a look at the universal joints and pumped some grease in But how can you tell if they are failing ? universal joint was my guess to the knocking noise

i bet it did , it was a company vehicle in Stirling The company then opened depots in Huddersfield and Teesside in the mid 90s that will explain the miles and the service history
