I have recently done this and had the same problem...I ended up giving the bolts a little tap with the hinge off and this seemed to enable them to push in a little further wasn't a problem after this - hope it goes well!!!

I have read somewhere that if you extend the axles with multiple plates, I think you need 7-10 35mm spacers mounted together, you can pretty much put any tyres on that you want - a friend of mine did this and he actually managed to mount some 46" wheels on his...of course, his top speed is now...
