Gasket-wise, am I right in thinking there are more than one type of gasket, and I won't know which one I need until I get the old one out?

Ok thanks - that's something at least. I'll have a search around here on the forum for any posts saying how to replace the head gasket on these engines. Or is it pretty much the same as on a 300TDi? I don't know what the differences are between the 200Tdi and 300 Tdi to be honest.

Managed to get a replacement from the scrapyard when I went and picked up a starter motor. Was a bitch to get the one out at the scrapper - the guy there did it though and gave me the bit plus vacuum hose for free. My broken one came out easier - levered it out with a couple of flat head...

Ok, rookie question - so supposing in the meantime I try and repair it. What would the symptoms be if there's a vacuum leak? Brakes won't work as efficiently?

Yeah heading to a breakers tomorrow in the hope that they've got a starter motor too. Just thinking that the chances of getting a replacement non-return valve out in one piece are pretty slim by the sounds of it

Could I try glueing it? Or would that just add to my muppet status?
