Perfect, exactly what I needed to know. Thanks very much!

    Transfer box gear selection!

hmmm, that sounds like a feasible cause of the issue. I think I may have to start tearing the seatbox back out again to get up close to it.

    Transfer box gear selection!

what I really need to know i reckon is if there is any adjustment on this bit, and how you do it. Haynes manual doesnt seem to think there is any.

    Transfer box gear selection!

yeah, the situation is the same moving or static, the lever hits the bulkhead before the gears mesh properly. It is engaging, but only in the way that when you try and move with any throttle it jumps out of high range straight away.

    Transfer box gear selection!

Yup, tried every combination and doesn't seem to want to work for love nor money. By all means thanks for the suggestions, christ knows I'm out of ideas!

    Transfer box gear selection!

Just given that a go, but it seems the the transfer lever doesn't quite get the box into high range properly. Its definitely moving too far forward because i can compare it to the old box.

    Transfer box gear selection!

I'm fitting another gearbox/transferbox to my series after the old one developed a problem, but now its fitted I'm having issues with selection of low/high range. The lever on the new one moves far too far forward and wont properly engage high range before it hits the transmission tunnel. Also...

    Gearbox

I've looked into the 5 speed conversion for my truck with a Tdi, but whichever way you do it it gets expensive and complicated fairly quickly. I've got big tyres and rangie diffs, which I have found adequate, although the gearing overall is a bit high really. You could go the whole hog and...

1 ton shackles and new springs question

I have extended shackles and new springs on the back of my 88", which would have a more severe prop angle, for the last 6 months with no issues. Worst comes to worst you will just have to replace the joints in the propshaft, neither an expensive nor difficult procedure. It's really a trade off...

    Bench Seats

I was wondering if anyone out there with 2 seater rear bench seats could help me? I need to know what the distance is between the seats when they are folded down. I'm contemplating swapping my individual ones for some bench seats, so that is is enough space for my permanent tool box in...

    Perkins Bellhousing Adaptor Ring

Adaptor Ring to mate Prima diesel to series 2 or 3 bell housing. It came on a gearbox that I have just bought for my truck, but I have a Tdi so is little use to me. These things are nearly £200 new, so I reckon £80 now isn't being too greedy. The part is going to be in Shropshire til...

    Side facing Seats, Defender, Series.

Hello there, I've got some individual side facing seats in the back of my truck at the moment, and was wondering if there was anyone out there who fancied swapping for some bench type ones. The ones in the back of mine are absolutely fine and in good condition. My reason for wanting to...

Gearboxes, what to look out for

Hi all! I've lost reverse gear in my series 3, and all symptoms suggest something massively internally wrong. Shame because it goes in the other direction beautifully. For a recon transmission I've had prices from £350 to £750, which scares me because you get what you pay for buying parts...

A twist on the usual P-Gasket issues

Have just taken off all the after pump gubbins to replace the P-gasket on my 300, strange thing is, there was no gasket to start with. Just a lot of Hylomar. That doesn't really worry me, but what does is the huge rust pit that has formed nearly crossing the entire area of the flange. What do...

That is a semi-factitious comment by the by.

    Burning Oil

If none of the above are whats happened, my 2.25 petrol had a similar problem because of worn valve stem oil seals, possibly made worse by using unleaded fuel. I just lived with it to be honest, there was'nt huge amounts of black smoke. I called it self-oil changing. I did eventually replace it...
