    have you opened the drum and checked for worn shoes or oil build up or broken springs ? i had the same problem on a td5 defender and there was a thick grease like build up on the shoes (from a previous oil leak ) so a good cleaning with petrol and was good as new . i would do a full rebuild...

    ive seen the pipes ,oil sump,trans housing,range selector cable ,chassis and the floor of the body get damaged with a prop that broke .

    update : i thought the wheel bearings were bad after all my checking, so we had another rear axel and thought it would be easier and less messy to swap the axels complete . after dropping the old axle it looks a little bent ( i dont know how it happened ) so it was a good call to swap the axles...

    sounds like the thermostat is stuck . how we usually build our discos is a custom built 5 core all metal radiator ,new thermostat and new waterpump , and we have not had any issues with them . i would at least do the thermostat and waterpump if i were you and maybe a new pressure cap . also...

    its not easy at all . i think i could angle the spanner and get a 1/4 turn at a time but the alternator bracket and a few small things needed to be moved . but to get it tight i used a hammer and a long screwdriver , i just couldnt get enough force with the spanner

    did you check the new cable is the same as the old one (proper lenght ) also im not too sure how the D1 are set up but the selector and the leaver on the box must be in the same position ( both in Park )and then tighten up everything.

    ive used a normal universal air con fan to replace a burnt out one and it worked out good and much cheaper than original . check out any good air con place near you that sells parts

    it could be the u joint (the one near the box) on the steering shaft has seized up .easy to check .

    if the lifting blocks are solid then the rubbers stay . if the blocks are soft rubber then im not sure , but i would say leave the original ones and add the blocks either way.

    what type of fluid are u using ? you need a good quality fluid. and how did you drain the old fluid out ? if you drained the resivoir only, then the box and lines still have old fluid in it , you will have to change it a few more times to get the old stuff out

    if it was a defender then yes the rad can come out with the fan on ..but the disco is not so easy . the fan will have to come out to get the rad out

    check the simple stuff first . brake hose may be blocked or a line kinked somewhere
