Make sure you give the cam followers a good inspection. A mate of mine sorted all his out, 200 miles later the follower gave up the ghost and his engine swallowed a push rod. A lot of work!!

Its a mystery mate. There is no logical reason why locking the diff would lessen performance in the muck. Possibly a psychological reason, either you were more confident so you gunned it more and lost traction, or you thought you could go through slower and lost momentum? Just a thought

IIRC starter motors are the same all the way from the 12 or 19j up to the 300. So you can widen your options a bit ;)

Front oil seal sounds like its gone if you are losing oil thru timing cover. Dunno about the blue smoke issue though
