    Puma wings

If wings of a new defender are costing less than those off an old one, there is must be something wrong. Is there a listing you can show us?

    bent push rod mystery

Not as bad as my ordeal. I turned my defender off after a trip to the corner shop, next morning it was seized because of a broken conrod!

    Burnt leather....yikes

That's exactly why we need to know the rough size of the hole-cigarette sized ones are easily fixed.

    Which Snorkel

As said before, if you want the tried and tested (though more expensive) one, definitely go for the safari. Though many hate the looks (myself included), they are probably the best snorkels money can buy.

    Burnt leather....yikes

How big is the hole? If the hole is too big to simply be "patched up", you may be able to get the seat reupholstered. Also, what year/series is you disco? If it is a series 1, or something you may be able to get a new (well) seat off evilbay cheaper than an reupholster job.

    Disserapering act!

I'm sure the authorities could quite easily check your evilbay history, credit card, bank account etc, and find out if you had been selling loads of land rover parts or something?

    Sealant for snorkel

Apparently you are meant to use "sensor safe" RTV silicone, whatever that means.

    Engine seized?

Also, I'm thinking that the engine must have previously been thrashed, since the conrod was replaced before I bought it (as I said, with some low grade item). I am the sort of person who won't buy a car if it has chavish seat covers, simply because I think this could indicate that the car had...

    Engine seized?

You are right that the engine must have been travelling a significant speed, because of the gouge in the crankcase. Looks like it might be a new engine job, since the gouge eats into the cylinder a little and also there are metal particles in the bearings (or something like that, haven't had a...

    Engine seized?

Thanks for your replies everyone. So I towed it to the mechanic yesterday to have a look. He took one look at it and told me to come back in a few hours. So I did, and when I came back the news wasn't good. Apparently, one of the connecting rods had previously been replaced with a duff unit, and...

    Engine seized?

Turned it clockwise, and as I said, it won't crank with the starter connected either. I've had the head off and there is no foreign material in the cylinder. I wasn't exactly chavving around last time I used it so I can't see it being a blown engine...

    Engine seized?

Thanks for all your replies. Still not cranking without the glow plugs, so I took off the head and put some oil down the bores, as suggested. Still no luck. Is there anything else I can try before I tow it to a mechanic?
