I can turn a spanner but................

......I am currently living in Harpenden, Herts and all my tools are up in Edinburgh and so I have had to resort to using the services of a garage for a cambelt renewal and clutch master cylinder renewal on the 300TDi. The shame. Jai on this forum kindly suggested Autoland in Luton but before...

    Bending chequer plate

Thankfully the Glasgow treatment wasn't required.

    Bending chequer plate

Well nearly. Offside wing top still needs doing. Small problem with the remnants of the original aerial which has seized in the hole. Turning the top retaining ring 9which really needs a special turn) just results in the bottom spinning. I have fired WD 40 on it and will try retaining the...

    Bending chequer plate

Outcome: Turns out I was worrying about nothing. I used the self tappers supplied after drilling pilot holes (2.5mm) and gently drew up the ones at the apex of the curve in turn with those either side. The CP pulled up to the existing contour of the wings no problem. A small bead of clear...

    Bending chequer plate

I think I might give this a go (gently) and then hope that the rivets pull it in the last couple of mm.

    Bending chequer plate

That is my worry that the wing pulls out to meet the chequer plate and not the chequer plate to meet the wing - chequer plate is 3mm, not sure what the wing is but less I would think.

    Bending chequer plate

I have just received two chequer plate panels for the wing tops of the defender, the latter having been dimpled and distorted. The fit of the panels in plan view is fine but the front downward curve of the new panels is shallower than the curve of the original wings to the extent that when lain...

Well I went and did it..............

Fettled, yes, molested, no. No chequer plate, no amateur wiring, no 2" or 4" lift. Just the equivalent of 2 new hips! ;-) Jon

Well I went and did it..............

..............I just bought a 1995 Defender 300 TDi. Unmolested and with a galvanised chassis. Seems to drive well although the brakes need a hefty welly to stop, but it pulls up straight. Slight grinding between 1st and 2nd on occasion but this may be due to air in the hydraulic system 9mat is...

    Time to buy a defender.

OK, I hope to see you and others then. I have PM'd you with ads for a couple of Defenders which I think may be worth looking at with a view to getting some comment/advice. I hope that is OK. Jon

    Time to buy a defender.

Excellent! I will come to the July meeting. I assume these are evening meetings? I may even have bought a Defender by then. Jon

    Time to buy a defender.

I currently live in the south of Turkey and have done so for the last seven years. Had a great time small time farming (peanuts, melons, sweetcorn, tomatoes etc), fishing, shooting (wild boar, rabbits, pigeon and (RSPB members look away) blackbirds and sailing. However, a new woman has come into...

    90 xs judder

Symptom could point to oil on clutch plates caused by worn rear crank oil seal. Check for oil under bell housing. Yeah, I know, would be odd if there wasn't.

Nice to hear that good service and quality items can still be found. Your write up is quite heartening Shifty.

    1956 lr 90!?

Interesting. I can't see how it could possibly comply with current rules/laws. If it could then anyone with a ratty old LR could build themselves a near new motor that would be tax exempt, LEZ compliant, benefit from lower rates of insurance, and even be exempt from MOTs if the latest government...

    1956 lr 90!?

Well, as I thought. no reply to my email to the seller. Somebody is not going to be too happy when reality dawns. Oh well caveat emptor. BUT it could be your stolen LR.

    1956 lr 90!?

I did the same yesterday and I'm not holding my breath waiting for an answer.

    1956 lr 90!?

Exactly, and hence the original question. If it was legal and reasonably easy everybody would be at it for free road tax and classic insewerance.
