    Series 3 Mainshaft Endfloat

OK - So I reassembled the front cover on the gearbox and put the nut on the back of the mainshaft. I'm running a RoamerDrive, so there's a big carrier bush thing that goes on the tail end of the mainshaft instead of the normal gear. Primary pinion is all sitting nicely with a new circlip and...

    Series 3 Mainshaft Endfloat

Thanks guys. Super helpful. That confirms what I thought must be the case. The book is clearly a bit ahead of itself! I have the rear mainshaft nut, and will hunt around and find a suitable spacer today to allow me to tighten it up temporarily and check that the float is gone. I'm now stuck...

    Series 3 Mainshaft Endfloat

Hi all. Onto the gearbox rebuild now in my 1976 S3 with suffix B box. I have reassembled it all, and mated it with the bellhousing. Now at this point the manual says "check that the mainshaft and layshaft rotate freely with minimal endfloat. The layshaft is fine. Once I tightened up the...

    2.25 Petrol cam timing

Thanks guys. In the end I used the old cam gear as there was really very little sign of any significant wear. I set it very slightly advanced (maybe 1 or 2 degrees at the most) as that was the best fit with one of the keyways and I figured that a bit of stretch in the chain would result in it...

    2.25 Petrol cam timing

The S3 engine rebuild continues. I have assembled the crank gear and cam gear. Both only have one keyway, so there's no adjustment apart from tooth by tooth on the cam gear. I set cylinder No. 1 to TDC using a temporary install of the crank pulley and the timing pointers, whipped off the...

    Con rod nuts

In the end I went to a local fastener place here and got myself some 3/8" UNF high tensile grade 10 nuts, which I then installed with Loctite. It turned out the originals were of two (very, very slightly different) patterns, so probably not OEM. They looked to be in good nick, but the new HT...

    Con rod nuts

Rebuilding 1976 S3 engine. Installed pistons and was about to reuse the old con rod nuts when I saw in the manual that they say to use NEW ones (their emphasis - so probably worth taking note of!). The ones I took out were Nylocs, perhaps a little taller (more thread) than ordinary Nylocs...

Series 3 Correct type of air filter

Thanks for all the advice. I'll see how things develop in the New Year. At least I have a few options now, and a bit more understanding of what should actually be under the bonnet. Cheers

    Rocker Shaft end plugs

Well - the shaft turned up in the post the other day and it comes fitted with the plugs! So problem solved. Prior to its arrival, I did actually email the suppliers and ask if it did, but got no reply. So rest assured, if you are getting a Britpart rocker shaft, you should not need to worry...

Series 3 Correct type of air filter

Thanks. Sorry, should have explained. A PO has cut the battery stand off completely. What is left now is four sort of home made legs, welded to the chassis, with a completely separate and again home made looking steel plate which bolts on top. It’s a bit of a mish mash to be honest. If I can...

    Rocker Shaft end plugs

Yep - Have supplies laid in! Mind you, I had to hit them reasonably hard to get them out, so hopefully they'll be a good tight fit in the new shaft.

    Rocker Shaft end plugs

Cut 30 mm off both ends of an old shaft and popped the plugs out from the inside with a pin punch. Easy job! The plugs are simple steel cylinders on mine, so they’ll go back in no bother. Cheers

    Rocker Shaft end plugs

From memory mine are just squared off blank ends, not even dished like a tiny core plug. Maybe a PO has already come across this issue and made his own! Anyway - with potentially four old ones to choose from, and a lathe to make some new ones, I should be OK! Easy way to save 50p! Thanks for...

    Rocker Shaft end plugs

Thanks Steve. Yeah - unfortunately mine don't have the little square driver end. They are just blank. I've got a couple of old rocker shafts so I'll have a go at cutting one down and seeing if the plugs come out. Otherwise it'll be 50p for parts and 20 quid for postage..... :-( Cheers Andrew

    Rocker Shaft end plugs

Stripped my rocker shaft out, unsurprisingly found huge wear under each rocker. Ordered new shaft and new bushes. The following day I realised that there are two little plugs in the end of the shaft itself, which do NOT come with the new shaft! Doh! And they only cost about 25p each! Doh...

Series 3 Correct type of air filter

Hey thanks very much for that guys - I had a suspicion that'd be the case. When was the change point to paper filter in cake tin housing? I've already got the oil bath, long hose and short hose - and now need to source the elbow. 5 quid does seem like a bargain, but then it'd be at least 20...

Series 3 Correct type of air filter

When I got my S3 it was fitted with a sort of home made air filter directly on top of the carburettor. I want to replace it with the correct type. It is a 1976, 2.25 petrol, NZ import. A web search for 1976 underbonnet shots yields photos of both the round paper filter in the cake tin housing...

    Series 3 Jack Stop

Yep - That's what I'm thinking. The old Shelley jack I have sits nicely under the flange on the back of the chrome ball and this bracket would indeed stop it slipping off sideways and hitting the surface of the ball itself. Other than that, it is just a rock/stump catcher! I wonder if people...

    Series 3 Jack Stop

Yes it does a bit, but it isn't! Here's a photo of one of them so we can all go "oh I see, mine doesn't have any of those..." They look a bit pointless to me, but it'd be good to get other opinions. Cheers

    Series 3 Jack Stop

Yeah - I've seen that in various places too, but I think that is a mistake, because the steering stop brackets are clearly these things (508175): The jack stop does not get involved in the steering at all. As far as I can make out, it just hangs down below the axle and gets bashed on rocks...
