How to: Series 3 Swivel Replacement guide

Good pictures. I'll be very interested to see how you get the half shafts back in. I found that was the worst part of the job. The long one was a real pig!

    FInally on the road

Beautiful! What are the lumps between the sidelights and indicators? Perhaps forward-firing machine gun barrels? ;)

    Gauge problems

This came up about a week ago. In that case it was a bad connection to the fuse; just needed jiggling. Probably the same here.

    Series III Tyre choice?

'will they need to be 235's, (I understand that's the height/ratio to width of the sidewall),' 235 is the tread width in millimetres, not the height. That would be '/60' or something like that. I believe if it's not specified, it means about 80. I'm ready to be corrected, though.

    74-Series3-2.25-Petrol

That back end looks very unusual. I love the chrome door handle and the clerical windows. The door hinges are odd too. Nice-looking, though. :)

Just like mine! Lovely - keep us posted. :)

    Fuel gauge issues...

'Are they connected and likely to both go down together?' They are on the same fuse, yes.

    Fuel gauge issues...

I 'lost' my fuel and temp. gauges a while ago. Turned out it was a dodgy fuse - try jiggling the fuses if it happens again.

Double pumping brake pedal to work and can't remove brake drums

If it's a Series, there should be a threaded hole in the drum which takes the little screw that holds the drum on, but you use it to push the drum off. Usually gives enough movement to break the seal on one edge, then you whack the other edge from behind. Book says use a soft-faced hammer, but...

    Perkins 4203 HELP

I also drove a LWB with a 4203, for years. It did pull the middle out of a couple of clutch plates, and broke a gearbox layshaft (I think - it was an inch thick I remember). It never failed to start, with the little bonfire burning in the inlet manifold. The main niggle I had was that it kept...

    Spin-on oil Filter adapter

    That's one l o n g car you have there! 88 feet is about 1000". :)

    Landrover 88, 2.3, 1974.

To be honest, if you want to carry bikes you'd be better off with a 109" (Long wheelbase). There's not a lot of space inside these 88" (I have one the same year as yours). As a taste of things to come, I have spent a few hours in this very hot weather underneath wax-oiling the bits of the...

Why do things wait till the morning of the MOT to break?!

Not always - a few years ago I was just leaving the garage with the new mot when the exhaust fell off on the first speed bump. I did consider going back, but...;)

What have you done to your Landie today.

My series III passed its mot last week, so I thought it was time to change the oil. Lovely day, so got under (no need to raise it up), sorted with only about half a gallon spilt. Then I thought, they advised the front brakes were out of balance, so let's adjust them. N/s no problem, but that...

Broken indicators driving me mad. In desperate need of suggestions!

We've all done it! Tell someone else your problem and, suddenly, you know what you've done. Good result.

help today if poss. oil filter bowl parts

No, you are right with what you have. You need to hold the housing as you tighten the bolt, and turn it gently to ensure it goes into the groove, not on the edge of the base. If it goes tight suddenly, it's probably not seated properly. It should go tight gradually as you compress the new...

    2.5 Petrol

My series 3 (2 1/4 petrol) has three places where you can put the oil in!* Breather and a filler in the rocker cover, plus the pipe that goes straight to the sump. If you're taking the breather off, check whether there's a little screw in the side holding it in. I had a bad half hour trying...

What is the best thing you have seen / done with a series landie

In my first LWB took 13 kids camping. They loved it. (Was in the mid-70s).

    tempreature gauge

If the petrol guage is also not working it may just be a bad contact in the fuse - try jiggling them a bit. This has happened to me a couple of times.
