This came up about a week ago. In that case it was a bad connection to the fuse; just needed jiggling. Probably the same here.

I 'lost' my fuel and temp. gauges a while ago. Turned out it was a dodgy fuse - try jiggling the fuses if it happens again.

If it's a Series, there should be a threaded hole in the drum which takes the little screw that holds the drum on, but you use it to push the drum off. Usually gives enough movement to break the seal on one edge, then you whack the other edge from behind. Book says use a soft-faced hammer, but...

No, you are right with what you have. You need to hold the housing as you tighten the bolt, and turn it gently to ensure it goes into the groove, not on the edge of the base. If it goes tight suddenly, it's probably not seated properly. It should go tight gradually as you compress the new...
