Is My Turbo About to Die?

That sounds like "The Correct Answer" to me Monkey. I'm a bit nervy about turbos as this is only the second I have owned. The last one was on my Mondeo 2.2 tdci. At least it was until it was eaten and defecated in quick succession. Wrecked the engine. Can't afford to have that happen again...

    Maaarrghk!'s TD5 De-restriction bloggy fing

Stage 3 (De-Cat Pipe) - Fitted at last! And about time too! Circumstances, weather and some titanium cross member bolts with toffee heads conspired against me. I ended up using the old hot spanner to get the back 4 bolt heads red hot, making them easier to whack off with the big hammer and...

Is My Turbo About to Die?

Mine pulls good too Monkey - especially since I de-catted it the other week. But the question is how long for? Hence I am trying to guage what sort of play on the spindle is acceptable and what is not. Or ideed, is this a credible way of assessing the state of the turbo? Sorry to appear full...

Is My Turbo About to Die?

Just been giving the end of my turbo shaft a good waggle to assess it's state of wear. There is no discernable back and forth play, but noticable side to side play. I realize that the standard D2 turbo shaft uses oil as its bearing face, therefore there should be some sideways play. The...

    Possible performance issue

Try changing the turbo hoses for silicones if they have not been done recently. They de-laminate internally with age, although you won't be able to tell as it will only happen when the turbo is trying to suck. Another cause could be a blocked cat. Try a de-cat pipe. When I removed mine I...

Synthetic or Semi-Synthetic oil for TD5?

Wise words there from Trewey. Explains why all the mechanics I knew as a lad (Saturday boy at an HGV garage) swore by "Uncle Duckhams" and detested castrol. I always referred to it as "Liquid Spanner in the Works" as a play on their liquid engineering advert. Fortunately, I live close to...

    TD5 blow by

I had meant to ask about the Provent and how it was going on. T'was I that asked where you got it from on your other thread. Well, I had a look in mine today and it looked bone dry. I ran my finger tip around the full circumference and it came out black - so almost bone dry in there. I looked...

    TD5 blow by

Hmmm. That looks quite smokey to me Benneh. What is the inside of his intercooler like I wonder? LRM are currently dismantling a trashed TD5 engine (the water pump drive bust and the whole thing overheated, wrecking the head and block). They pulled the hose off the turbo and there was about...

Cleaning roof - how do I reach?

If yours has air suspension, you can wait for the air bags to leak, then you won't need a leg up at all.

So how does it go now?

    TD5 decat and centre box

i am also thinking of a dummy one, but the chap round the back who lends me his ramps reckons he knows an MOT tester who is "One Of Us" and will not notice a missing cat if the emissions are OK.

Oh, take no notice of him! He's very nice though.:D

    TD5 decat and centre box

I just fitted a Paddock de-cat. Well recomended. Front cross member was a sod to get off though. Soaked bolts in plus gas for over a week and they still all rounded off with a snap-on hexagon socket. Had to resort to the "hot spanner". Some prize plonker at LR decided that 10mm heads on M8...

    Snapping bolts

With them sitting high in a nice warm engine bay and not being part of the exhaust, you should find that these will be among the few fasteners that won't snap off. I used some plus gas over a few days just to be on the safe side.

    BennehBoy's D2 adventure

Thanks for the info Benneh as well as your kind offer of a good Nanocoming - I might need to take you up on that later in the year if I don't get a little windfall. Currently "de-restricting" mine, so when I get to the final stage (re-map by Dynajet) I will want to be sure that everything is...

Cleaning roof - how do I reach?

I have a small boy you could use. None of the mines or chimney sweeps round here will take him. They say that they "don't do that sort of thing anymore". Mind you, he would probably jump around a lot and eat half of your clay bar. My fall back position is a couple of small trestles and a...

Buying stuff and never fitting it!

Nigel, I don't think any of us are worthy after that one. You are indeed The Master. Anything better than that would be going into the realms of "The Four Yorkshiremen" sketch. "I bought a set of push rods for a 1912 Model T, 25 years afore Enry Ford were born........."

    BennehBoy's D2 adventure

Bravo that Man! A most excellent and interesting thread - I will be looking forward to seeing how it goes with the Provent as I have a Serck intercooler in the shed, but don't fancy it getting bunged up with oily gunk and having to flush it out on a regular basis. I would be most grateful if...

Buying stuff and never fitting it!

Air bags came on thursday and fitted frisay morning. Is this some kind of shameful record I wonder. I did redeem myself while putting my tools back in the shed when I noticed the new fuel filter I got last august just after I bought the car. There it shall remain for now.............
