    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

Thanks thebiglad. Under the carpets is bone dry - maybe the coolant was escaping through the air-con condensation drains? The pipes I am wondering about are the ones that run along behind the bottom of the radiator about 9 inches beneath the viscous fan. They have some coolant staining on...

Never rains but it pours (power steering fluid)

Is this the right part number (for my RHD D2)? QEP000082 Should I also consider changing this pipe too ANR6974 Whilst I have the patient open is there anything I should look for?

    I sure will Cheers

Never rains but it pours (power steering fluid)

I found a leak under my car - I was hoping it was coolant (see my other long running thread of denial). Turns out it was power steering fluid. It looked like the dmp patch starts near the left hand side of the radiator. Is this a known failure point for the PAS pipework? And do I need to...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

Ok, the ongoing saga (of denial) continues The heater core is now bypassed at the end of the hoses that lead from the engine compartment. (I'm aware that this may have cooling issues when running at a standstill) The coolant leak is much reduced - hoorah! We still get the occasional whiff...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

Ooh - failed clips that sounds like it could be something to check on the way down to the head gasket - I'll bear that in mind I'm pretty sure that if the filler cap were a problem there'd be tell tale leaks around it - sadly none - that would've been nice. Hmm I guess it could be keeping the...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

Cheers all I'd love to roll my sleeves up on this one - the only engine I've been inside is the one on the lawn mower. But sadly I need the car to get me to/from the work so it can't be left on the drive whilst I dawdle on its repair. A local mechanic will need to be called in I feel. On the...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

Right. It had a sniff test. The engine was left running for 5 minutes and checked again. The blue solution resolutely remained blue. The carpets were dry and there was no obvious leaks. She's still losing coolant at about the same rate. It can only be the head gasket - despite the test :(...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

nope - nor am I a fitter fellow - mostly because I work in computing :) But I own a D2 and try my best with the spannering so I can't be all bad :) I'll definitely see what they can do when I next talk to them. Thanks

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

This sniffer test sounds ideal. Does it really work? I thought the pressure of the coolant would prevent any contamination getting into it. I'll ask at the local garage though. What about the splitter test? How does that work? This weekend, though, I will be sniffing the carpets :-)

T-Max compressor - hose connectors and gauges...

Turned out the connections were non standard - well non standard in the UK. The compressor came with a nasty tyre inflator with one of these connectors at one end - I took that to a local 'air' company and they cut off the tyre adaptor and crimped on a 1/4" bsp connector - thus making an...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

£500 sounds to be the entry point to this problem :) I'm still hopeful that I'll find a leak - but steeling myself for the HG. Can someone tell me what/how the 'splitter test' is performed/works?

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

Excellent two more things to check when I get back home this weekend. Forgive my ignorance but where would a litre of coolant go if it was a hg problem. Would it make the engine oil weaker, burn off somehow? I read on a pdf document I found on the internet that the coolant system has up...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

Tell me more - my hoses are still quite squeezable when up to temp pressurised more than cold but not hard as iron - I was interpretting that as bad news. I know! Stop hoping for the best - keep my feet on the ground - like as not its the HG Ah! I had a read of this thread: Coolant exploded...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

I'll add them to the list - thanks - no obvious coolant leak stains around that area but I'll certainly look again. But if a TD5 had a HG leak would the mpg/performance not drop significantly?

Can Disco sunroof leaks be cured?

Yes - but depending on what has gone wrong it can be a large amount of work. If it as simple as poking some fine wire down the drain holes it could be easy but beware you don't poke too hard and push the drain pipes off - leaving the water to run into the car  If that has already...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

Thanks Nigel - I'll not get my hopes up - but it'll be great if that was the problem - unless they cost 2k to fix too :) I'm somewhat flumoxed by the thought the HG has gone as she is turning in a remarkable 28mpg (from twice weekly relatively aggresive(fast) 50 mile journeys) Doubly...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

I guessed that was where we were heading :( The top end of that scale is almost the value of the car hmm, with the problem its more than the value of the car. Still I guess its more of an answer to my 'is she worth it thread' - Probably not I'll see it through a pressure test and see...

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

So there's no likelyhood of her only losing the coolant through a leak at a certain speed in such a way that there's no coolant stains :( What's it likely to cost to get the head problem resolved - £500 or a lot more?

    1 litre of coolant - 120 miles - what's the likely cause...

My TD5 D2 ran virtually empty of coolant a couple of weeks back - I got home by keeping an eye on the temp gauge and freewheeling as much as I could! Anyway, I topped up the coolant last weekend (took the bleeder screw out, raised the header tank until coolant came out of the bleed...
