Vent pipe replaced and now it starts first time , how?

I'd be looking at what got disturbed/messed with/handled to get the vent pipe into place. Or, at the vvery outside, the old vent pipe had chafed through a wire or something and was causing an issue - which the new one (being shorter) is not doing.

Series 3 Zenith 361V rebuild howto

Not really - lower top-end and general power - throat is a lot smaller. it's a good 'economy" carburettor. I have one of each, myself, on different cars - and they each have their virtues. In any case, this is not the place for this argument, methinks...

    Oil everywhere!!!!!

Just speculating, but I expect that you've cracked a piston or some such. Get it running, then pull off the oil fill cover and see how much crap is coming out the oil fill hole (smoke/steam/pressure). Cracking off (looosening) the injection feeder pipes to the injectors should tell you what...

    Newby with a tyre question

Then you came to the right place. Ask your questions - there's very knowledgeable folks here.

    Locking handbrake

If the rear bearing is bad you''ll be able to move the brake drum up and down. Were it me I'd open it up and examine the springs and such - if one's gone bad you could have the shoes shifting, which then gets reset when you set and release the handbrake. Just speculating here, but if it's...

    Newby with a tyre question

i'm very fond of 235/85 - 16s on Series trucks - had them on my 88 and have them at present on my 109 and my 110. Easily accessible, not terribly expensive. For a replacement for the 6.50/7.0 x 16 tyres that the SWB trucks originally came with(narrow rims) I've got 215/85 - 16s - narrower and a...

    Purists rejoice!

Depending on your hobbies, you could put agressive off-road tyres on them, or simply strip the old rubber off and flog 'em on. Much better look on the truck - i agree. Good move! Alan

Series 3 Fired the Series 3 up for the first time today. Low oil pressure

+1 on the sensor - seen them fail before. If you don't have one, now might be the time to fit an oil pressure gauge - they're a nice thing to have and all my trucks have them. Alan

    200Tdi Power Loss

A conical element stuck on the end of the intake manifold is probably some generic thing the person who did the TDi conversion stuck on there. Don;t worry about it for the moment - that's likely not your problem. This was someone's attempt not to deal with the oil-bath air cleaner...

    1958 *******103

Were it me I'd rebuild it to a good state. You can always still use it to take the rubbish to the tip - there's no reason in the world to keep a car a shed just because it's used for mundane tasks. Alan

are all series rad caps the same internally?

I'd have been tempted to do so personally, but i still think the cap you have is opening way too soon. The old Series cooling system setup was a throwback to the Dark Ages :) and is very low-pressure. I'd suggest a 10 or 12-pound cap would be a good idea - and I know those can be had at the...

New 110 Defender - Problems Smoke and Noise

Valve stem seals are easy enough to do with the head on using air pressure to hold up the valves, or a bit of rope shoved in through the spark-plug hole if it's one of those petrol things. Done the trick on V8s, 2.25s, 2.5s...it's all essentially the same. I have a write-up (few pictures...

    90 fuel gauge

Yes, that will do it. You just need to change the position of the float in refernce to the sliding contact in the gauge. Pull the sender out, hold it in the position it would be in the tank, then bend the float end down a bit. I'd do it up by the gauge not right at the float end - otherwise you...

Series 3 Zenith 361V rebuild howto

The way to tell if you have a warped casting is simple - wind the mixture screw all the way in. if the car dies, the O-ring is sealing properly between the upper and lower halves (which is a part of the warping problem). This sounds like another carb that could use a dip - or at a minimum a...

are all series rad caps the same internally?

Yes on the seal, not necessarily on the caps being the same. You need to make sure the pressure is correct - the early Series caps are only like 7 pounds pressure. With the 101 I'd expect it to be 12 pounds or so but I don't have a manual here to confirm (working from memory of an early RRC I...

Series 3 Zenith 361V rebuild howto

Re: Flatting carb edges: You'd be surprised how bad it is. It's a matter of 10 minutes to clean it up, and well worth the effort. As far as the water and dust I'd think about dipping it if you can get it. Here in the States you can buy a 1-gallon paint can 3/4 filled with solvent and a dipping...

    200Tdi Power Loss

Re: Stutter: If it had an ignition i'd tell you to change the points... :) However, no - this makes me more suspicious of the fuel especially in light of the fact that the truck sat for an extended period of time. With a Diesel all you need is fuel, air and compression and it goes round and...

    200Tdi Power Loss

Couple suggestions: 1. Don't buy a cheap pump - it's not worth it. Delphi is very goood, and nothing in a blue box (Britpart) should ever be installed on your Rover. Trust us on this one.... 2. Don't call in sick for this - sneak out at lunch and fix it. :) 3. More seriously, when you go to...

    200Tdi Power Loss

    1. Yes, crap from the tank could be the case, but could still be a dodgy pump...so filter change and retest. 2. Filter: No, don't just thump it. :) Check the passages in and out and make sure it's clear and there isn't some crap or a bit of wastepaper or whatever blocking the airflow. If your...
