Get a big spanner and a short scaff bar (for leverage) and lift the pre tensioner. Should slide off the pulleys.

TBH its a **** either way... at least if you are under it only your legs poke out and not your ass if you lean in... You can get to it either way though. Oh, use a ring spanner not a socket. Just takes a while to undo - one of those pain in the ass jobs for a relativly quick fix...

It does look easy but the bottom bolt on the alternator is a bugger to get to... When you put the belt back on make sure the ribs on the belt realign back on the pulleys otherwise its a new belt in a few miles... I tried doing mine on my own and its a mare... You need to lift the pre...

You could try this: Protecta-kote is an advanced Polyurethane anti-slip paint that lasts, anti-slip UK Specialist, anti slip coatings I used it inside once I had taken the carpets out. Smells for a while but is good stuff. Not too sure about the outside but see no reason why not...
