    Gaylanders are great int snow

I saw a Panda 4x4 in that shade of pink about 10 years ago..... I had a white one as a stop gap when the 109S3 1tonne 2.6l petrol died on me with terminal chassis failure, the last straw, you understand, there were other issues, 9mpg being the main one.

    Bell Engineering

Bell Engineering recon VCU fitted 2 weeks ago proves itself in the 30cm snow we have here in Holmfirth this week. 4WD works exactly as it should and got me out and up some very snowy icy slippery hills. Even managed to provoke the TC lamp to come on too. I drive in deep snow a bit old school...

    Which Freelander

As an ex series owner, Defender user (works vehicles) Disco owner for 6 years and currently a Freelander owner, go on, and give one a try. Post 2001 TD4 is the only one to go for tho, as they (LR) nearly got it sorted by then. Of course, Discos, Defenders and Rangies ARE totally without...

    get Vcu done or not?

Their website says that if you buy a rear diff or ird from them, then it's only warrantied if you also fit one of their recon vcu's. Ha Ha, no wonder , if the vcu they sell doesnt actually work as a vcu. I understand they have a good reputation re. conventional gearboxes for series, defenders...

    get Vcu done or not?

I've just replaced mine at 72k, a Bell Engineering recon, £200, + vat etc. They also fitted the new support bearings on the recon, good uns, not cheap crap. Very very slight braking effect on full lock reverse turns, as one would expect. 4WD works as it should. I'm well happy with my recon unit...

    Freelander advice pls

My last car was a 300TDi Disco, auto, nice old bus, reliable for a LR, put 60k on it in 6 years, very practical. Replaced with a Freelander TD4 auto, does everything I need it to, which is mainly road work, true, but we get snow here every winter, proper snow, not just 1 or 2 days disruption...

    Which Freelander

Having had a Disco 300Tdi auto for the last six years, and looked long and hard at a very late 300 or TD5 to replace it I've gone Freelander TD4 auto. Its more nippy, better on fuel, narrower, so squeezes thru gaps in traffic better, quieter, has better on road handling. Disco had lots more room...

    Blast from the past

My Freelander has got something else in common with my first Landy, a 109 1 ton, 2.6l petrol. No, not the fuel comsumption, thank goodness. It's been a long time since I had to de-ice the inside of a windscreen! No heated screen or FBH on mine, worst luck. Are these wee 150w plug into the ciggie...

    Fuel additive???

I've read up the stuff on 2 stoke oil on the link site, sounds very interesting. Many owners of highly strung older Brit and Itie sports bikes swear by a teaspoon or two of Castrol R in the fueltank........

50 quids worth of fuel in a td4????

30mpg daily drive to/from work. Some hills, some 40 limit steady speed, some stop start town centre stuff. 11 miles door to door, generally takes 25-30 mins, so quite good I reckon. regards, Bill

    Buying Advice Please

I've had my TD4 Auto 6 weeks, ok, its an ES 02 reg, but most if not all of the weaknesses are the same. Check everything electric/electronic works, from sunroof to HDC, seat heaters to mirrors. Make sure you understand what the warning lights sequence at start up is and make sure NO lights come...

    VCU Disaster averted!

My understanding is that post 2001 the gearing was changed for exactly the reason you give. However that is not my point. Even a new viscous coupling, whether its on a Freelander, Panda4x4, VW synchro 4wd van etc still has an inherent stiffness. With very small differences in propshaft speeds...

    TD4 Rear windscreen exploded!!!

Thanks Willo, good tip. My mates 52 reg puts the rear wiper on in reverse even without the front wipers turned on, guess thats another thing for me to look into and try and sort for him.

    VCU Disaster averted!

My Bell Engineering recon is on and works just as it should. I was able to spin the front wheels, well more of a scrabble, as the TC cut in, when pulling out of the 1in 3 gradient out of my lane onto the main road, when only 2wd. Now with 4wd back no such problems, the back wheels are definately...

    TD4 Rear windscreen exploded!!!

Bad luck. I've never heard this before. My old Disco had a few elements not working and I never gave it a second thought. Just an idea, could it be due to the glass being frameless, so the glass is made differently, or less flexible than a normal framed window?

    whats a good battery

I fitted a cheapo "Vanfit" battery to my ex Disco 4 years ago, still fine when the ol girl went to new owner. We fit Varta batteries to the trucks that come in to us, pricey but reliable. My Moto Guzzis have Varta batteries, currently 8 years service and still very much ok. Try a local...

    VCU Torque test results

I am about to fit a Bell Engineering recon vcu. Having spoken with them and seen their way of testing vcu's I am very confident that these peeps do know what they are doing. Their units come complete with the rubber damper and they will fit bearing carriers with good quality bearings to it...

€603 to replace 2 handbrake cables

How the hell can Landrover dealers justify £140 phr labour? Its a total rip off. I work for a main dealer for DAF trucks. A top of the range tractor unit, say an XF105 is way way more complex in electronics, pneumatics, hydraulics etc, and costs a damn site more than any Landrover!! Also every...

    Insurance

Just had my invitation to renew from Sureterm, change of vehicle from worthless Disco L reg 300TDi auto to 02 TD4ES Auto wiv all the options on, £230 fully comp, other cars not owned etc covered, ncd protected, 8000 miles pa limit. I am an old bast**d tho. I'll renew unless NFU beats it. The...

    VCU Disaster averted!

I've spoken this morning to Bell Engineering, basicaly they've got my business. Very forthcoming when questioned. Also guarantee their units for 12months or 60k miles. None on the shelf at the moment, so I'll stick with 2WD for the next few days. There's no snow forcast is there? Cheers all.
