If you are talking about the one behind the plastic panel of rear offside wheel arch I'm 90% sure that filter and housing is a complete unit that has to be changed in total.

Send it back under warranty... something is on its way out or perhaps MTF oil needs changing

Bypass the heater matrix, which probably has the airlock, by linking the input and output feed at the engine bulkhead. If it doesn't overheat, you know where the issue is. My old 300Tdi had a blocked heater and it seems any issue with the heater flow will affect the main system.

I had my temp/clock/voltage monitor (about same size as your scanguage) in that little cubby hole for a while but now have put it where you had yours, over the steering wheel console, using double sided sticky sponge :)

Try to get OEM as cheaper replacements don't always sit properly. Lowering the window fully may allow changing without removing spare tyre.

Heater matrix is a smaller radiator behind the console centre vents that carries coolant from the main cooling system and uses it to heat the interior. If you are losing coolant and there is no leak from pipes, radiator or heater then I would suggest you have a blown head gasket and hot gas...
