I had a similar problem in mine and it turned out the fuel filter was blocked. I undid the bleed point on the bottom of the filter and some golden treacle type liquid dripped out. Not sure what it was but changed the filter and got her running. Might want to check that before trying the lift or...

Sounds like it'll probably need grinding off and a new one welding on. I've not done it before but I'd imagine you would be able get a new one from paddocks or somewhere but not sure on that. Someone on here will know no doubt.

You still have to chop down the wings at the front and the rear doors and quarters so why worry about leaving holes too?
