Hi Guys,

I purchased a 2004 Discovery 2 TD5 in January and have just hit my first 10k mark so just changed the oil, filters etc. Whilst draining the engine oil, I glanced over and noticed this missing plug. Can someone tell me what it’s for. I’ve been driving this on the regular and have had 0 issues (touch wood). I’ve been told it could be a home for a wading plug but have no idea. Thanks in advance

Maybe it is for the special cradles LR use when changing gearboxes out, i.e. they use it to bolt the cradle to for the gearbox jack.
Can you feel or see an "end " to it?
I've not heard of wading plugs on TD5s but that doesn't mean much!

I’ve queried this elsewhere and was confirmed to me that it is the wading plug hole for the bell housing, engine doesn’t have one as isn’t needed but bell housing does and its random from what I’ve seen if you have one fitted still or not. I don’t think it’s needed honestly but I suspect some earlier probably did then they dropped them.

I haven’t got one on mine, I did try to get a plug for it and was pointed towards RTC4335 but that’s far too big and might be for 200 300 tdi’s.

Honestly I wouldn’t be too worried, I’ve seen some lads in some utter dirty water, they ain’t got it plugged and gearbox is fine still.

Also take all the above with a pinch of salt, cause you know, haven’t heard from the horses mouth lol.

I would be upset if water was getting into the gearbox and would quickly find out how, as that would mean oil would be leaking out ☹️
