110 Exhaust question

Hi,

Defender 110 2008

A local garage is servicing my 110 which needs a complete exhaust.

However they say the front pipe and catalytic converter is in good condition except for the lower flange. They are trying to save me money and are wondering whether there is an aftermarket part which would allow them to retain the catalytic converter. Basically cut the damaged flange off and replace with a new one which would be connected to the pipe coming from the catalytic converter.

You'd need to find a flange the same as the rotted one, know idea what they look like though, might be complicated for a DIY guy to replicate.
A pic would help.

A cheap intermediate straight through would have a flange they could cut off and reuse, what about the old intermediate pipe flange?

But TBH is the labour cost of faffing around worth it? Now if you were doing it yourself I would say yes. At garage rate I would question it.
Unless they have a bit of plate laying around and can cut the flange and weld it over the old pipe (yep you can see how the labour is adding up).

Dont know the cost of the cat pipe though so may well be worth the faff.

I think all cat pipes are pricey aren't they? I know a 38 one is.

I've got a new mid section silencer in my garage due to go on my 90. I'll get a pic and measurements for the flange later this evening and post here. Don't know if the 110 cat is the same as the 90 but can't be much different - an absolute nightmare to get it off the vehicle. And they are phenomenally expensive to buy. I reckon the garage is right, get a flange welded on.

I used one of these.

Took some measurements (On a 90 silencer). Should be the same on the 110, but do check yours. Had a look on flea bay, there are loads of repair flanges ready fixed to short lengths of tube, for just a few quids. A bit of searching should find you a suitable flange to fit the silencer, and tube with internal diameter to match the outside diameter of the pipe from the cat. Should then slip on and clamp in place, no welding needed. Point to note, the pipe from the cat changes outside diameter about an inch from the flange at the silencer - 66mm od at the flange, and then a straight length 60mm od about a foot long towards the cat before it bends. I would choose a slip-on repair piece to suit the smaller diameter and cut the larger diameter bit off with the dud flange. Hope this and the pics help.
