Updated intercooler - benefit without tweaking pump?

Have my hands on a pretty much new allisport intercooler for very little money.

Is there any benefit to fitting it to my 200tdi without tweaking the pump. I’m not going to adjust the fuel system but does an updated intercooler improve the efficiency (not bothered about power) alone? My gut tells me no but thought I’d ask you lot.

Fair my thoughts as well. Might just flog it or keep it and fit if I sell so it’s tuning ready or maybe fit it and have a wee fiddle with the pump. Who bloody knows.

Fitting the intercooler and adjusting the fueling will make a noticable difference. You could up the fuelling now, and make a difference, and overheat the engine likely causing damage.

If you do do it, DON'T take it to Strathearn Engineering in Aberuthen for tuning as they are the biggest and most expensive bunch of time waster in Scotland. Fine (if you want to pay a fortune) should you want the oil changed or them to fit the Britpart catalogue to your landrover, but for any tuning or 'fixing' things they are forkin useless (+ chuffin' expensive) and don't have the right tools. All you will do is discover that 'Strath' is scots for 'Tossers' and 'Earn' means 'gimme-loads-a-money'.

I'm firmly in the 'it came out of the factory that way for a reason' camp so probs won't fiddle with the pump but did toy with the idea

Why doesn't it make a difference with just the intercooler alone. You'll get denser and therefore more O2, if anything it should send the fuel/air mix in the other direction aka under fueled?

There's me thinking, bigger intercooler = lower temp denser air into the engine. which burns betterer.

Yes, burns betterer, but you now you need to increase the fuel (and air) as fuel-in = power-out.
It's all set up to be mildly innefficient as is. Does your defender run better in winter at sea level and worse in summer in the lake district ?

With a larger intercooler the air is lower temp and more dense so now you can add a bit more fuel and a psi or 2 on the boost and feel a difference in power over the whole range, but until you do there will be little to no difference... well maybe you'll get 1 mile per gallon more ... maybe.

After a while you will hit a plateau which will require a larger/slipperier exhaust, but to reach that nirvana the engine will need redesigning and the fuelling/timing will need to change with the rpm, you can possibly tune a 200tdi to act like a standard 300tdi but it will never be a TD5 or a Transit as they both need sophisticated electronic engine management systems.

If your old cooler is a bit rats then you may well notice a bit of improvement, as payydg notes above cooler air = more O2. May be not be much but depending how you drive also save a tad of fuel.

Wish I knew that before I got them to help finish my series 3 rebuild (was struggling to find time and enthusiasm to do it myself) they said it wouldn’t take much then handed me a bill for £7,000!
