Defender TD5 ECU failure !!!!

That's who I sent mine to, I had those mails, it's in the workshop, it's being checked by an engineer, and then I phoned them they did not know anything about it and when I called them back later they oh yes we have tracked it down it will be checked tomorrow.
Then they said they had checked it and there was nothing wrong but they wanted to repair it for something like the £300 you mention, I gave them a miss.

I had occasion to ring them and the people answering the phones clearly aren't technicians or engineers. They must just be the salespeople. However, they got it working again for less than the price of a new one (assuming that you can find a new one nowadays), so not too bad overall. I've certainly been stung for more than that for car repairs in the past.

Yes it's reversed and goes up to max when cold with the defender map it works ok
Mine starts at normal then goes to cold when the engine warms up ..I Have a 2000 defender but have a 15p engine . I use a discovery nnn series ecu but still keep the old msb series next to it and somtimes swop over when i have a problem (to eliminate the ecu) was guided on this by pete bell some years ago.

The TD5 ECU is not known for failing, l assume you checked (as best as possible) for other faults, such as oil in the wiring harness/alternator over charging/engine earth strap defective etc

l've had my ECU fail twice since posting this.
That'll teach me

Well, they were mostly OK until a few years ago, and now they seem to be giving up the ghost in quite large numbers. I'd better buy some more before we reach a point where there are a large number of TD5 owners chasing a very small number of ECUs. There'll be tragic tales of people having their Land Rovers broken into and having the ECU stolen. Firms will spring up offering ECU compartment security devices.

I see the price increases are already happening. A quick look at Ebay shows that the NNN500020 model is typically £750 to £800 now. You can get a secondhand engine for less.

When my ecu died recently, for a 15p engine (an NNN one), the place I went to supplied a MSB ecu with all the software for a later defender for £500. Chap said they are getting really hard for them to get and refurbish.

I've a failed ECU that's currently with ECU Testing for repair. Fortunately I have a spare to keep me going, but I really hope they can fix the original, for the reasons mentioned above.

It would be amazing if someone could reverse engineer the ECU and put replacement boards up for sale, as it doesn't bear thinking about what the situation could be like in a few years time.

Is it working well? My engine seems very fussy and will only start on NN500020 ECUs. I've tried others, but it just won't go.
There seems to be a lot of aftermarket electronic engine management around for popular performance engines like the General Motors LS series, but I haven't seen anything for the TD5 yet. Apart from the dreaded clip on boost boxes of course.

It was just plug and play. Didn’t have to mate it with the 10AS or program the injectors. Also came with a mild remap which has transformed it. It’s an MSB ecu but NNN defender software
