Cos if they are washers ,and it’s similar design to the RR breed, then the axle seal is stuffed too and will need alignment too.

The axle seal on a Disco isn't a big problem. I changed the boots on mine for the MOT last year, there was no appreciable wear in the swivel ball joints so, although I had bought the tooling and the new joints, I left them well alone. Stripping down to the ball joints isn't difficult and the alignment isn't a problem either so there must be a bit of difference between a RR and a disco. And if all he is going to do it change the boots he doesn't even need to undo the hub nut which is done up to a stupid feck off high torque. But if the swivel ball joints are worn, that's the nub of the problem.
He can take the half shaft out with the CV joint on it and then replace the seal quite easily. He will just need to be mega careful to take the ABS sensor wire out with it, which is a bit fiddly but not all that tricky.
 
Got 3 of them so law of averages says at least 1 is working:eek::D.

If I jack up and take the wheel off will I be able to check for wear in the joints?
If it is the seal and boots I might take a deep breath and have a go at that after doing my research!!!!
Jack it up? Yes, but leave it so you can use a pry bar or summat to pry the wheel or joints up and down, no need to take the wheel off, though it makes it easy for access etc.
 
Could it be the half shaft oil seal (FTC4822)?

Oil passing that seal could spray everywhere and cause a fault in huh sensor and I turn 3 amigos?
 
There is a simple answer to any Land Rover problem.
Buy another car as a daily driver so you can take your time fixing the LR.

That works for me. PLUS, i get between 50 and 70 mpg. Something you only get with a TD5 if you've connected a rope between you and a vehicle in front :D
 
Hi, when I had oil like that on mine it was the d/shaft oil seal which as others have said is straight forward enough, and as @Stanleysteamer says don't bother undoing the hub nut (or removing the ABS sensor from the hub) just take the whole d/shaft out being careful with ABS sensor wire which unplugs from the engine bay. Like you I hadn't tackled any jobs on cars/LR's before but you learn fast;). Having said that you say your losing p/s fluid so it might be worth having a good de-grease first (after cleaning mine the oil would leak from the d/shaft seal & drip into the road wheel without even driving it) ! If you look at my previous post(s), & others, about changing the seal (inc.changing the steering knuckle ball joints, never again) you'll see how I removed the hub from the knuckle without having to resort to big 'ammers:).
