How To Check series 3 Rear diff level

Hi, Ive just aquired a series 3 and would like to just check the oil levels before using it.
The rear diff has the fill plug in the diff casing and not in the backplate, should I fill the diff to this plug using it as a level or should the level be a certain distance down from the plug.

Yes use the fill plug as the level. Have plenty of rag handy to catch the inevitable spill.

That axle diff will have come from a series 2a or perhaps an early 3

I usually fill to the bottom of threads in the hole then refit the plug my Series 3 has filler plug in that location front and back even though front has a filler on axle case also.

Mine is like that as well.

Wish my rear axle was as simple as that, as its a Def 3.54 diff on a 2a rear axle so no filler plug so as i can't check the level i just drain it off, pull an half shaft out, jack one side up and put in the right amount of oil and re-fit half shaft
