Petrol in Deisel tank!

I just put 1.2l of petrol in my 52 plate Disco 2. Topped it up to full with 75l of diesel to fill 80 litre tank. So about 1.5% petrol. Anyone out there as dumb as me who has experience of this, or smart enough to give good advice on what next. I drove it 1/3rd of a mile home.

Not a smart move as the poll don't have Bob is gay in it. But still anyway the issue you will have is the petrol reacts with the diesel acting like a thinner. This will clean parts of the engine inside causing a pinking effect. Do you have contact with a rescue service AA or RAC to drain the fuel mix safely. Or a means to store the mix in a drum. The next thing after drainage is to replace the filters and reprime. Then monitor for a small journey for pinking then again replace the filters.

One litre in 75? I doubt if you will notice any problem, the proportion of petrol to diesel is too small to cause problems.. I did some thing similar with the Discovery 300TDI and had no problem.

This. I once put nearly a tenner's worth of petrol in a 320D. Topped it off, no worries.

Thanks to all. Responses helpful. I postponed a trip today to be on the safe side and will call the guys who maintain it on Monday to get their take. Much appreciated.

If you ask the people who are paid to maintain it, they will probably say it needs draining, flushing, new filters and a set of tyres.

I'd drive it.
In the old days, peeps used to put petrol in with their diesel to stop it going waxy in the winter. So "all weather" diesel must already have something in it to thin it!
The wife and I have both, in the past, accidentally filled the tank in two different vehicles, neither Landies but one was a more modern car with "fly by wire" injection.
The tanks were just drained then filled, and as the pipe from the tank never goes to the bottom, there would always have been some petrol left once they were filled up with diesel. both cars were fine.

If you take it to a garage they will deffo tell you to not only have it drained but also prolly make you do other stuff.
Up to you, but I really wouldn't do that unless driving it gives funny behaviour. But I would keep topping it up with diesel rather than driving till it's nearly empty. So you would be continuously diluting it.

I think some peeps might be a bit worried by the fact that a 200tdi is a bit more of a, dare-I-say-it, agricultural type of engine as opposed to the TD5.
But then some parts of the world prolly have contaminated diesel and maybe the TD5 is designed to cope with this? To a certain extent. Imagine crossing Africa, bet there'll be some dodgy diesel on sale in some places.

If you are that worried dob a litre of engine oil in the fuel tank.

I ran a td5 for years on some seriously bad fuel, it was a mix of all sorts, but it was free!

Did the same with my 300tdi, get cold up here in the winter.

People used to uses petrol to stop diesel from freezing I would just keep topping it up to dilute it more, would not want to do it with a newer modern engine

Doubt if it will be a problem. Fill up again when about half full. With diesel this time.

The only likely effect is it might clean out your fuel system a bit, so might be worth changing the fuel filter in a few weeks time.

As above - I really wouldn't be worried about <2% petrol in derv.... and I second chucking some oil in...

I'd also second NOT asking anyone who you pay to service vehicles ..... Though it might tell you something about them if you do ask, hypothetically, as it were .....

Such a small amount, it's really not a problem. You might notice it runs slightly better, but even that's unlikely

Add 250ml of mineral two stroke oil, for good measure, then just drive it.

As suggested, you'll probably find it has improved throttle response and power, on the next tank of fuel, as petrol is an efficient injector cleaner.

I second this. Not been tempted to do it deliberately afterwards tho !

As said, mineral two stroke, 250ml to a full tank, works great. It noticeably improves consumption and response, as well as emissions. I run it a lot. Cheapest is from Screwfix.......

Castrol R40 makes it smell nicer
