The battery will be scrap, as the Lead Acid battery is seriously damaged by being left in the fully discharged state. The fact it didn't start the car after a 20 minute charge is pointing that way too. ;)

Buy a replacement and fit that.
Is it a start stop engine? Those batteries aren't cheap! You can have start stop disabled and put a normal battery in if you want to keep the cost down but either way the car will need to be told it has a new battery and how many AH it is
The battery is buggered. You might revive it somewhat with an intelligent charger in ‘recon’ mode, but the end is nigh. It’s also a lot of strain on the alternator, charging up a flat battery, so I would go for a bench charge rather than driving about.
Thanks guys.

Its a basic 2002 model - no start-stop. It does though drive very well. Mind you I only ever travel in my Freelander, so to sit in the passenger seat while he drove it around was like sitting on the floor and, even though I'm not short, couldn't see anything of the car looking out the windscreen - was quite off putting - just felt wrong.

I'm going to give the battery a charge, but by the sounds of it, looks like the battery is dead. He's not got much cash as he's studying, but its his birthday next month, so maybe an early gift is in order.

Get yer wallet out ya miserable grumpy old b#gger! :p

Jump starting a car risks damage to yer own so its not a good idea. Most of the time there won't be a problem but why take the risk.

Its much safer to charge the flat car with yours running for 5 to 10 minutes, then disconnect and let the flat car start itself.
