Hi gents,

Lazy arse defender driver here. Got a lovely old dog to drive around in, but never been great on the spanners.

was wondering if any of you pros could
do a list according to a 5,000 mile a year usage. What you’d check in a weekly/monthly/3 monthly basis etc.

thanks in advance!

The Haynes manual has all this info readily available and should be on the bookshelf of all 200TDI'ers :D However, give yer nipples a grease, and change yer engine oil fer a start. You could tackle the diesel and air filter as they is 5 minute jobs and don't require spanners. Then move on to the axel oils, gearbox and transmission oils then maybe the swivels. Good luck ;)

i do similar miles to you mainly on road and i have a 200tdi and this is what i do at what times, bear in mind that mine leads a very charmed life and is garaged.
Also a good habit to get into is fixing advisories on your MOT as soon as you can after the MOT

weekly:
tyre pressures

monthly, all of the above plus:
fluid levels (all) and top up as necessary
bulbs and light function, and horn

6monthly, all of the above plus:
grease all grease nipples and props
underbody inspection looking for rust, damaged rubber gaiters, exhaust condition, new leaks etc.
check fan belt/pas belt tension
check handbrake and footbrake operation (adjust handbrake if necessary)

yearly, all of the above plus:
check fan belt/pas belt tension
change all engine, gearbox, xfer box and diff oils
change air filter, oil filter, fuel filter
drain sediment bowl of water (mine is ex-mil so yours may not have this)
check wheel bearings for play - service.change as necessary
check steering and suspension bushings for play - change as necessary
grease door straps, locks, hinges etc.

every 2 years, all of the above plus:
new fan and pas belts
change brake fluid
swivel grease top up
set tappets (should be yearly really)
rotate front tyres onto rear and rear onto front

other things are then time or mileage dependant, timing belt for example i would do 5 yearly. I dont do all those things on a religious 'one day' basis but more on a rolling basis, some years i might forget something and other years i might do something twice, plus running repairs etc.

thanks so much for this- a great comprehensive reply!!!

Only unknown about mine is that it’s an ex disco engine and of course paperwork been lost blah blah, but looking over the files I reckon it’s about on 100k on the engine (clocks on 190k)
seems to be a quite leaky. Cause for concern or standard to get leaks on a 200tdi?

leaking isnt normal, that indicates worn seals or gaskets - would be worth trying to track down where

ignore all the people that say 'a landrover should leak' thats rubbish, they werent designed to leak.
mine has a couple of minor gearbox leaks but the actual engine is bone dry

That is good common sense....

I know that there was an issue when u fist bought it with a leaf from the clutch fluid (if anybody could give me a pointer where that is, in case it happens again, I’d be grateful)

I’ll have to work out where the is ones coming from but seems direct from the engine? It’s dribbling down and creating a mess lower down the engine bay, but when I look at the engine oil level it seems fine!

by the way my window for those timepoints is +/- 2 months either side lol depending on when i can do it, and what the weather is like. I refuse to lay on my bank in the rain any more lol

clutch master cylinder is on the bulkhead to the right of the big round brake servo (on a right hand drive vehicle) it can leak from there, the pipe then runs back along the top of the bulkhead and down to the slave cylinder (underneath the starter motor) where it goes into a rubber flexi and then into the slave cylinder on the bellhousing.
Most likely leak place is that flexi hose at the slave, the slave itself (clutch fluid on the floor) or the master cylinder leaks (clutch fluid on the clutch pedal)
