Series 3 88" with a Ford Transit DI engine fitted

Hi guys
Over the past few months me and son have been working on another landy project a 1972 S3 88 that's fitted with a Ford DI engine fitted by a p,o and after doing loads of work on the landy we managed to get it on the road this week and whilst not expecting it to be a rocket ship it seems very slow and max's out between 50-55 and is slow through the gear's would this be right with this engine setup the fuel and air filter have been changed inc a service of the engine the gearbox and axles are std and has 235-85x16 tyres fitted, is there anything we could do to make it better or are we expecting to much

Forgot to say it's got an o/d as well.

A friend of mine had a 109 with this engine. Despite having that typical Transit racket, heard from miles away, it actually went really well. Therefore, would suggest something is amiss, or your expectations are too high. Although, 50-55 isn't right. A normal 21/4 would do that. Presumably a series III box with o/d?

Yes it's a S3 box with o/d

What engine is it exactly? I’ve often been puzzled by some of the swaps people have done. As some of the engines make less power than a standard LR engine.

When I bought my rrc it had a di in it, yeah noisy and slow but was excellent on fuel. Cant really comment how slow as I cant remember, was 15 years ago

Not 100% if it is a Tranny engine or from a Metrocab as the engine was already fitted but going to see if adjusting the throttle screw will help later.
Will post a pic later and try and get the engine number as well

The Tranny "banana" engine is pretty good, but the old Ford Diesel from the 80's is very very slow. A freind had a diesel Fiesta - the engine must have been 1/2 the all up weight, top speed was under 70 and it took 1/2 hour to get there. But it was really good on fuel. It got stolen by joy riders and they gave up after a few miles!

Think we have sorted it now by backing off the rev stop screw a tad and adjusted the throttle clap to the accelorator pedal rod on the engine side of the bulkhead and it will do 75 now so really happy with that

Result !!
