Hi I have a discovery 2 td5 auto problem.
When cold the revs will not increase above 1000 rpm to bring in the drive.
Auto boxes are a mystical science to me but I have heard it is something to do with the torque converter.
Mileage is just under 200k and the G/B fluid has just been changed with a full flush
During the winter I am in the French alps so it does get a tad cold
Many thanks

Hi, how long does it take to be driveable after the cold start and what year is the Disco ? i'm wondering what the autobox would have with engine rpm though

That's a hefty mileage on the box, i'd a said. what colour and smell did the old fluid have?
And +1 for start up from cold, mine gets a bit like that and the higher you are the colder it gets;););)

I did forget to ask but as the garage are specialists in auto boxes and he was a landrover engineer I would have thought he would mention as it may have been another job

IMO as long as you can't rev up the engine it's not an autobox issue, as the result of the stall test when the rpm won't climb above a limit the result is ''reduced engine power'' so your engine can't deliver enough power when it's cold... if it was gearbox issue usually the revs should go up to normal while the box would not shift well.

btw can you rev it up right away in neutral?

In gear (D or R) engine won’t rev above 1050.
In N engine revs ok.
Rev to about 1200 and slip into gear without jolting.
Gear box shifts ok

I see where you are coming from now as the load of the Torque conv. is enough to load the engine to prevent from revving.

On the stall test, page 44-21 of Rave says “below 1300 rpm indicates a torque converter fault, i.e. stator free wheel”.

Maybe worth another filter and fluid change, the ZF box apparently responds well to fluid changes. You’ve nothing to loose really.

Good luck....
