That looks like its just a generic simple hack to alter the maf signal, with a bypass switch on the casing. VW guys used to do something similar with a simple resistor, and called it the Evry mod.The Synergy2 while more expensive is a far more rounded tuning box comprising a maf alteration circuit, and a tweak to the Fuel Pressure Sensor signal, as well as a tweak to the Manifold Absolute Pressure signal, so it tweaks airflow, boost pressure and fuel delivery, with numerous options for how to set it up.

Need to get one and take it apart.
That would be good for a laugh Andy - but a waste of money?

Those cut in connectors (what ever they are called) I particularly dislike - particularly in an engine environment - it seems like an invitation for wire corrosion and unreliability... :( Otherwise, you could fit it, and see how it alters the ECU signals using your diagnostics box :)

You need to be careful messing with fuel pressure on the TD4. The HP fuel pump is already running at a pressure approaching it's maximum output. Pushing the fuel pressure higher has been known to cause leaking of the pump head seals. Mine leaks when I have the Synergy connected, but not when it's disconnected, which proves there's an issue at over inflated fuel pressures.

The EVRY mod is quite popular in Rover L Series circles to, as discussed here...
